India versus South Africa 2nd ODI: South Africa clinch the series with a comfortable win

South Africa showed their domination as they chased a stiff target with ease in the 2nd One-day international against India played at Boland Park, Paarl on Friday.

Indian captain KL Rahul won the toss and decided to bat first. Shikhar Dhawan looked in great touch taking advantage of bad bowling by Sisanda Magala. On the other hand, KL Rahul took some time to settle and did not attack the bowlers. At the end of the first 10 overs, India scored 55 for 0.

After the field restrictions, Dhawan continued to score runs easily while KL Rahul was not able to attack Markram. Markram provided the much-needed breakthrough for the hosts getting rid of Dhawan caught by Magala. The Indian openers laid a strong foundation adding 63 runs for the opening wicket. Soon after, Maharaj struck getting rid of former captain Kohli caught by Bavuma at covers to leave India in trouble.

South Africa missed a golden run-out chance as both Pant and KL Rahul were involved in a mix-up but could not grab the opportunity. Rishabh Pant put pressure on the South African bowlers especially Shamsi with positive intent. On the other hand, KL Rahul looked steady giving most of the strike to Pant. It was an amazing batting display by Pant who took on the opposition bowlers and completed his fifty off 43 balls. Rahul was given a third reprieve as Markram dropped a simple chance at backward point. KL Rahul looked composed reaching his half-century off 71 balls. Right after the 2nd drinks break, the Indian captain fell caught by der Dussen. Rahul and Pant added 115 runs for 3rd wicket.

Shamsi was bought into the attack and got rid of Pant trying to clear the boundary caught by Markram at long-on. The South African bowlers kept tight lines and lengths not allowing Shreyas Iyer and Venetaksh Iyer to score runs easily. Shamsi struck again dismissing Shreyas Iyer on review. The umpire gave not out and on review, it was overturned to out leaving India in some trouble. Venetaksh Iyer looked decent enough before a brilliant piece of stumping by de Kock ended his innings.

Shardul Thakur provided some resistance and put on valuable runs along with Ravichandran Ashwin. Thakur continued his superb form with lovely strokes while Ashwin also hit important runs to help India post 287 for 6 in 50 overs. Thakur and Ashwin added unbeaten 48 runs for the 7th wicket.

In reply, Quinton de Kock provided a flying start taking on Bhuvneshwar Kumar in his first over. Pant missed a golden stumping chance to get rid of de Kock. Jasprit Bumrah was spot on with line and length. After the initial struggle, Janneman Malan and de Kock took the attack on Indian bowlers. At the end of the first 10 overs, South Africa scored 66 for 0.

After the field restrictions, de Kock and Malan kept the scoreboard ticking hitting boundaries with ease. De Kock completed his fifty in quick time off 36 balls keeping momentum for South Africa. Shardul Thakur finally struck for India getting the wicket of well-set de Kock. De Kock and Malan added 132 runs laying a strong foundation.

South African captain Temba Bavuma came to the crease and looked in decent touch along with Janneman Malan. Janneman Malan completed his fifty off 66 balls. Bavuma and Malan looked at ease hitting boundaries at will making life tough for the Indian bowlers. Jasprit Bumrah produced a superb yorker to get rid of Malan. Malan and Bavuma added 80 runs for the 2nd wicket. Soon after, Chahal dismissed Bavuma with a simple return catch to give India some hopes.

Rassie Van der Dussen and Aiden Markram took advantage of the lackluster bowling by the Indian bowlers. Despite Venetaksh Iyer bowling, Dussen and Markram kept Bumrah out before both completed the job with ease. Both batters added unbeaten 74 runs for the 4th wicket.

South Africa 288 for 3 in 48.1 overs (Janneman Malan 91, de Kock 78, Bumrah 1/37) beat India 287 for 6 in 50 overs ( Pant 85, KL Rahul 55, Shamsi 2/57) by 7 wickets.

For his 78 off 66 balls, Quinton de Kock was awarded the man of the match. South Africa seals the 3 matches ODI series with one match to spare. The third and final ODI will be played on 23rd January in Cape Town.
