India versus South Africa 2nd Test 4th Day: Dean Elgar’s heroics helps South Africa level the series
Thanks to a superb captain's knock by Dean Elgar, South recorded a famous win over India on the 4th day of the 2nd Test match played at Wanders, Johannesburg on Thursday.
The match began after the tea session with South Africa on
118 for 2, Dean Elgar and Rassie Van der Dussen started on a positive note
keeping the scoreboard ticking. KL Rahul decided to bring Ashwin into the
attack along with Jasprit Bumrah. Elgar looked composed reaching his fifty off 131
balls. Dussen and Elgar kept India at bay showing their intent to keep South
Africa ahead in the game.
It was an amazing performance by Elgar and Dussen who did
not allow the Indian bowlers to settle. Shami produced a peach getting rid of
Dussen caught by Pujara at slips. Dussen and Elgar added 82 runs for the 3rd
wicket. Temba Bavuma came to the crease looking in decent touch while Elgar
remained calm and composed. Despite lots of plays and misses, both South African
batters made batting look easy. The Indian captain KL Rahul set defensive
fields making life easy for Elgar and Bavuma.
Siraj was not up to the mark after an injury he picked in
the first innings. Bumrah looked out of colors. Bavuma and Elgar put on unbeaten
68 runs for the 4th wicket. South Africa chased down this target
easily winning it by 7 wickets. It was a superb batting performance by the
hosts as Dean Elgar led the charge with 96 not out.
After winning the toss, the Indian batters did not perform
well in the first innings scoring just 202 runs. Thanks to Shardul Thakur's 7 wickets,
India conceded a lead of just 27 runs.
South
Africa 229 in 79.4 overs ( Keegan Petersen 62, Bavuma 51, Shardul Thakur 7/61)
and 118 for 2 in 40 overs ( Elgar 46*, Markram 31, Thakur 1/24, Ashwin 1/14) and
223 for 3 in 67.4 overs ( Dean Elgar 96*, Dussen 40, Thakur 1/47, Shami 1/55) beat
India 202 in 63.1 overs ( KL Rahul 50, Ashwin 46, Marco Jansen 4/31, Oliver
3/64) and 266 in 60.1 overs ( Rahane 58, Pujara 53, Ngidi 3/43, Rabada 3/77) by
7 wickets.
With
this win, South Africa opened their account in the ICC Test Championship points
table. For his 96 not-out, Dean Elgar was awarded man of the match.
The
third and final Test match will be played from 11th January at
Newlands, Cape Town.
