India versus South Africa 3rd ODI: South Africa whitewash India with a thrilling 4 runs win
Despite Deepak Chahar’s heroics, South Africa registered a thrilling 4 runs in the third and final One-day international played at Newlands, Cape Town on Sunday.
Indian captain KL Rahul won the toss and decided to field
first. Deepak Chahar was given a chance in the playing XI gave a perfect start dismissing
Janneman Malan with stunning delivery. Quinton de Kock looked in brilliant
touch putting the bad deliveries away for boundaries and making life tough for
the Indian team. A superb direct throw resulted in the run-out of Bavuma. It
was some good bowling by the visitor's bowlers keeping tight lines and lengths.
At the end of the first 10 overs, South Africa made 53 for 2.
After the field restrictions, Prasidh Krishna looked
impressive with his pace and troubled de Kock. Aiden Markram showed intent
hitting some brilliant strokes before a lovely catch by substitute Gaikwad took
a good catch. Markram and de Kock added 36 runs for the 3rd wicket.
Pant made another mistake dropping Van der
Dussen. De Kock showed skills reaching his fifty off 59 balls. Indian team
missed a big-run out chance to dismiss well-set de Kock. De Kock and Dussen put
pressure on the opposition bowlers. De Kock and Dussen took the attack scoring run
with ease. It was an amazing batting display by de Kock reaching his century
off 108 balls. Dussen maintained his consistency reaching 50 off 53 balls.
Jasprit Bumrah was bought into the attack and got rid of well-set de Kock
caught by Dhawan. De Kock and Dussen added 144 runs for the 4th wicket.
Soon after, Chahal got rid of Dussen with a good running catch by Shreyas Iyer.
A superb throw by Iyer and run-out by Pant resulted in a run-out of Phehlukwayo
to leave South Africa struggling. Miller survived a close LBW shout given not
out but on review, it was retained as not out due to the umpire's call.
Dwaine Pretorius and David Miller steadied the ship against
good disciplined Indian bowling. After the initial struggle, both batters hit
some lovely shots. Prasidh Krishna got the big breakthrough getting rid of Pretorius
caught by Surya Kumar Yadav. Miller and Pretorius added 44 runs for the 7th
wicket. Prasidh Krishna did a superb job getting the wickets of Miller and
Magala to bowl out South Africa for 287.
In reply, India did not have a great start as KL Rahul was
dismissed by Malan at slips. Virat Kohli started the innings with a lovely
boundary. Dhawan and Kohli steadied the ship for the visitors to keep momentum.
At the end of the first 10 overs, India made 50 for 1.
After the field restrictions, the experienced batters kept
the momentum going for Team India taking singles and hitting occasional boundaries.
Dhawan continued his superb form reaching his half-century off 58 balls while
Kohli reached 50 off 63 balls. Phehlukwayo provided a much-needed breakthrough
getting the wicket of Dhawan caught by de Kock. Kohli and Dhawan added 98 runs
for the 2nd wicket.
Soon after, Pant played a rash stroke off his very first
delivery to leave India struggling. Shreyas Iyer came to the crease and looked
positive along with Virat Kohli. Keshav Maharaj provided the big scalp getting
rid of Kohli. Kohli and Iyer added 38 runs for the 4th wicket. Surya
Kumar Yadav looked in decent touch putting pressure on South African bowlers.
Iyer failed to grab the chance caught by Phehlukawyo at fine leg. Iyer and
Surya Kumar Yadav added 39 runs for the 5th wicket. Surya Kumar
Yadav also fell after getting a start caught by Bavuma at mid-off.
Jayant Yadav failed to contribute any runs caught by Bavuma
to leave India struggling. Deepak Chahar looked in sensational touch timing the
ball brilliantly hitting shots with ease and keeping strike rotating. Bumrah gave
good support while Chahar showed great courage giving a scare to the South African
team.
Bumrah was given out by the umpire and on review, it was
overturned to not out due to the ball not hitting the bat. Chahar completed his fifty
off 31 balls giving a big chance of winning the match. Chahar was not able to
keep calm as Pretorius took a running catch. Chahar and Bumrah added 55 runs for
the 8th wicket. With 6 runs required off the last over, Chahal provided
a simple catch to Miller giving South Africa thrilling 4 runs win.
South Africa 287 in 49.5 overs ( de Kock 124, Dussen 52,
Krishna 3/59, Bumrah 2/52) beat India 283 in 49.2 overs ( Kohli 65, Dhawan 61,
Chahar 54, Ngidi 3/58, Phehlukwayo 3/40) by 4 runs.
For his 124 off 130 balls, de Kock was awarded the man of
the match and for 229 runs was named man of the series.
