Ireland Cricket Team creates history
Ireland registered their first-ever series win against a full member nation after defeating West Indies in the third and deciding ODI match played at Sabina Park, Jamaica on Sunday.
Ireland captain Andrew Balbirnie won the toss and decided to
field first. Shai Hope provided a flying start for West Indies taking on
Ireland bowlers with attacking strokes while his opening partner Greaves looked
solid enough. Hope dominated the play and reached fifty off 37 balls. West
Indies raced away to 69 for 0 at the end of 10 overs.
It was a brilliant comeback by Ireland bowlers as Young got
the breakthrough getting rid of well-set Hope. Hope and Greaves added 72 runs
for the opening wicket. Ireland bowlers kept picking wickets at regular
intervals putting enough pressure on West Indies batters reducing them to 119
for 7. The experienced Jason Holder steadied the ship for the hosts putting up valuable
runs along with Akeal Hossain. Holder was run-out with a mix-up to end a strong
63 runs partnership for the 8th wicket. Odean Smith provided some
entertainment remaining not out on 20.
Ireland got off to a disastrous start as they lost an early
wicket of experienced William Porterfield without opening his account. Paul
Stirling and Andy McBrine looked cautious before putting pressure on West
Indies bowlers. At the end of the first 10 overs, Ireland made 51 for 1.
After the restrictions, Stirling and McBrine kept the strike
rotating before Hossain dismissed well-set Stirling ending a 72 runs
partnership for 2nd wicket. Harry Tector joined in with McBrine keeping
the pressure on West Indies bowlers. Both showed intent making life tough for
West Indies and made sure that Ireland scored runs with ease. McBrine reached
his fifty off 89 balls while Tector completed a well-compiled half-century off 72
balls.
Odean Smith eventually struck for West Indies getting rid of
well-set McBrine to end a strong 79 runs partnership. Roston Chase and Hossain put
pressure on Ireland batters with a flurry of wickets before Mark Adair and Craig
Young held their nerves to help Ireland register a thrilling 2 wickets win.
After a few players, Ireland players were tested positive and
injuries, Ireland showed great fighting spirit to register a historic series win.
Ireland 214 for 8 in 44.5 overs ( Andy McBrine 59, Harry
Tector 52, Chase 3/44, Hossain 3/59) beat West Indies 212 in 44.4 overs ( Hope
53, Holder 44, McBrine 4/28) by 2 wickets.
For his all-around performance, Andy McBrine was awarded the man of the match and man of the series award. Ireland moved to 3rd place in ICC ODI Super League.
