Stats: Hard-hitting batter created history
It was an amazing night of T20I cricket between West Indies and England in the 3rd match of the series played at Bridgetown, Barbados on Wednesday.
England stand-in captain Moeen Ali won the toss and decided
to field first. The decision paid off as Garton and Livingstone grabbed 2 early
wickets dismissing Brandon King and Shai Hope. Powell started his innings with
a massive six after dot delivery. At the end of the first six overs, West Indies
scored 54 for 2.
After the field restrictions, Powell demonstrated great hitting
display with big shots and kept the momentum going for West Indies. It was a
superb effort by both West Indies batters to rescue before taking on England
bowlers. Powell completed his fifty off 31 balls and then upped the ante scoring
26 runs off Liam Livingstone over to keep the momentum. Pooran played a key
role in being dismissed for a superb 70. Pooran and Powell added 122 runs for the 3rd
wicket. Soon after, Powell took the charge completing his maiden T20I century
off 51 balls to help West Indies a massive total of 224 for 5. Powell was
eventually dismissed for 107 with 4 fours and 10 sixes.
In reply, Tom Banton gave some hope for the England team
with a brilliant 73 off 39 balls with 3 fours and 6 sixes. The visitors kept
losing wickets at regular intervals before Phil Salt made a quickfire 57 off 24
balls with 3 fours and 5 sixes. Despite their efforts, England lost the match
by 20 runs.
Rovman Powell was awarded the man of the match for his 107
and 2 catches. He became the 3rd West Indies to score a century in
T20I cricket. The hard-hitting West Indies batter has the ability to smash shots
with 34 matches with 484 runs including 1 century and 2 half-centuries.
Chris Gayle and Evin Lewis scored 2 T20I centuries each.
Gayle scored his first century against South Africa in the opening match of
World T20 2007 and then 100 not out against England during World T20 2016 at
Mumbai.
Powell would be looking to build on this performance and
hope to see West Indies qualify for the main round for World T20 2022.
