Badminton Asia Team Championship 2022: Indian men’s team stay alive with a thrilling win
The Indian men’s team showed their fighting spirit as they registered a thrilling win in their 2nd match against Hong Kong played at the Setia City Convention Centre, Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia on Thursday.
Bronze medallists of World Championship 2021, Lakshya Sen gave
India a perfect start defeating Lee Chik Yu in straight games. The first game
was a close-fought affair before Sen won it by 21-19. Sen dominated the
opposition in the second game-winning it easily by 21-10.
In the first men’s doubles, Manjit Singh Khwairrakpam and
Dingku Singh Konthojuam lost to Law Cheuk Him and Lee Chun Hei in three
thrilling games. Both pairs fought for each point before the Indian pairing won
the first game by 22-20.
The Hong Kong pair fought back strongly keeping the pressure
on the young Indian pairing winning the next two games by 21-15, 21-18 to level the match
at 1-1.
Kiran George disappointed for the Indian team in the second
singles match as he lost to Chan Yin Chak in three games. Kiran looked out of
sorts losing the first game easily by 13-21. The Indian fought back strongly with
great attacking shots winning the second game with a scoreline of 21-17 to force
the match into the decider. Chan played with aggression in the decider and won it by
21-9 giving Hong Kong a 2-1 lead.
With the tie at stake, Hariharan Amsakarunan and Ruban Kumar
defeated Chow Hin Long and Lui Chun Wai in the second doubles match. It was a
brilliant performance by the young Indian pairing winning the match easily at
21-17, 21-16 to make the tie at 2-2.
Mithun Manjunath showed great fighting spirit defeating Jason
Gunawan in three thrilling games. The Indian produced a dominating display in
the first game-winning it by 21-14. Jason fought back strongly to win the
second game at 21-17 to force the match into the decider. Mithun then displayed an attacking display and never allowed his opponent to come back winning the third game
easily at 21-11 to register their first win of the tournament.
The Indian men’s team lost to 0-5 in the first game against South Korea. They will now face Indonesia in another do-or-die match tomorrow.
