FIH Pro Hockey League 2022: Indian men’s team suffer loss to Spain

 After a stunning comeback win in the first match, the Indian men’s team suffered a loss to Spain in the 2nd tie of the Pro Hockey League 2022 tournament played at Kalinga Stadium, Bhuvneshwar on Sunday.

It was a superb beginning by both teams before Abishek with a brilliant run to give India the lead in the 6th minute. The Indian team dominated the play keeping pressure on Spain's defense. 2 minutes before the end of the first quarter, Spain earned a penalty corner that was converted by Pau Cunil in the 14th minute to level scores at 1-1. Soon after, Tarres scored brilliant skills to give Spain a 2-1 lead and ended the first quarter with a 2-1 scoreline.

It was a superb start for the Indian team in the 2nd quarter as they were awarded a penalty corner for blocking attackers but on review, it was overturned. Pau Cuncil scored from a brilliant penalty corner in the 24th minute giving Spain a 3-1 lead. Harmanpreet Singh kept India’s hopes alive with a superb penalty corner shot in the 27th minute to reduce the gap at 2-3. At the end of the first half, Spain led 3-2. Both teams had the same number of circle penetrations with 12 each. Spain earned 4 penalty corners as compared to 2 by India.

The third quarter saw the Spain defense rock solid not allowing the Indian attackers to create chances. India also took a penalty corner but was unable to create the chance. Despite attacking moves, Spain kept the hosts at bay. At the end of the 3rd quarter, Spain still led 3-2.

Sukhjeet Singh scored a brilliant field goal in the 51st minute on his international debut to level the scores at 3-3. Spain took the advantage of penalty corner as Pau Cuncil scored went past India’s goalkeeper to give visitors a 4-3 lead. The Indian team decided to take off the goalkeeper as Spain Marc Miralles scored from a penalty corner in the 59th minute giving visitors 2 goal cushion.

Spain closed out the game-winning it by 5-3. It was a superb hockey game as the Indian team kept the pressure on Spain but was not able to convert chances. The Indian men’s team will now play Germany on 12th and 13th March at Kalinga Stadium, Bhuvneshwar.
