FIH Pro Hockey League 2022: Indian women suffer last minute loss
The Indian women’s hockey team suffered a last-minute loss to Spain in the 2nd leg of Pro Hockey League 2022 played at Kalinga Stadium, Bhuvneshwar on Sunday.
It was an ideal start for the visitors as B Garcia scored a
superb field goal in the 4th minute to Spain's 1-0 lead. Spain put
enough pressure on the Indian defense with attacking play. Spain could have
doubled the lead but a brilliant save by Savita denied the visitors the goal. Sangita
Kumari making her international debut for India scored a beautiful reverse
flick diving inside the D as there was no defense from Spain in the 10th
minute to level the score. Spain showed consistent pressure on the Indian
defense as M Garcia converted a penalty from a deflection in the 15th
minute to give Spain a 2-1 lead. At the end of the first quarter, Spain led 2-1.
The second quarter saw Indian strikers did not sit back to
put enough pressure on the Spain defense. Salima Tete broke past the Spanish
defense running down the right into the D with a precise reverse shot in the 22nd
minute to level the score at 2-2. Spain took lead again as Segu played to Iglesias
standing near the post. Iglesias put the ball in the air and then lobbed past
Savita in the 24th minute to give Spain the lead again. At the end of the first
half, Spain led 3-2.
It was a much better beginning for the Indian team in the 3rd
quarter. After a few minutes, the momentum shifted to Spain who looked dangerous
creating lots of chances. Indian goalkeeper Savita produces magical saves
denying visitors from doubling the lead. India was awarded penalty corners before
Spain reviewed the decision. The third penalty corner was given a penalty
stroke. Savita Punia saved the penalty stroke to double the lead. At the end of
the 3rd quarter, Spain led 3-2.
Spain kept attacking but the Indian defense held on
decently. Namita Toppo equalized once more in the 49th minute with a
brilliant field goal. Both teams fought for the winner. Jyoti was given a 5-minute
suspension meaning India was with 10 players. Lopez Maria was also given a 5-minute
suspension. Gine went past Savita Punia in the 60th minute to give
Spain a thrilling 4-3 win.
This was India’s first loss in the FIH Pro Hockey League
tournament. It was an amazing performance by both teams as the Indian team attacked
with more precision. Indian women’s team will next play Germany on 12th
and 13th March.
