FIH Pro Hockey League Match 3: Indian team stunned by France
After two successive wins, the Indian men’s hockey team lost their first match to 13rd ranked France side in the Pro Hockey League tournament played at Northwest University, Potchefstroom on Saturday.
It was a cautious start by both teams with attacking play
missing quite a few chances. Varun Kumar missed a deflection shot that went wide
off the goal. At the end of the first quarter, the scores remained 0-0.
India started the 2nd quarter on a good note with a penalty corner, but the trap was missed by the dragflicker. France showed great
skills with counterattack as umpire gave penalty corner, but French decided to
review the decision and was overturned to a penalty stroke. Victor Charlet
converted into the goal in the 16th minute to give France a 1-0 lead. Soon
after the goal by France, India put pressure on the French defense and was awarded a penalty corner. The shot was well saved by the French goalkeeper.
India made a good comeback into the match as the shot hit
the stick of French defender. Jarmanpreet Singh was awarded a goal in the 22nd
minute to level scores at 1-1. France produced a stunning counterattack as Indians
could not match pace. Shailand Lakra was awarded a green card right before the
end of the first half. At the end of the first half, the scores remained 1-1.
France showed their attacking skills right from word go in
the third quarter with two back-to-back penalty corners but could not convert
into a goal. Lockwood produced a superb shot inside the D in the 35th
minute to give France a 2-1 lead. The Indians put pressure on the French defense
with multiple penalty corners, but the French goalkeeper and other players kept
India at bay. At the end of the third quarter, France led 2-1.
It was a brilliant start by France in the final quarter as
they earned a penalty corner. A deflection goal by Charles Masson helped France
go up 3-1. India earned one more penalty corner, but the French goalkeeper produced
a superb save.
Harmanpreet Singh took the advantage of a penalty stroke in the 57th
minute to reduce the gap to 2-3. Soon after India was awarded two back-to-back
penalty corners. The second one was mistraped by a dragflicker. France then
produced a counterattack as Charlet scored from a penalty corner in the 59th
minute to make it 4-2. In the last minute, Clement made it 5-2 with a superb
field goal.
India got 10 penalty corners as compared to 4 of France. It
was a great performance by the French side looking in great shape after being
outplayed by India in the first game by 0-5.
India plays their next match against South Africa on the same ground. They are currently in third place.
