India versus Sri Lanka 3rd T20I: Shreyas Iyer’s brilliance gives India another whitewash

 The Indian men’s team continued their winning momentum as they cruised to a convincing win over Sri Lanka in the 3rd T20I match played at HPCA Stadium, Dharmshala on Sunday.

Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka won the toss and decided to bat first. Mohammed Siraj and Avesh Khan asked tough questions of Sri Lankan openers. Siraj castled Gunathilka stumps to deny Sri Lanka a good start. Avesh Khan looked impressive with his lines and lengths two wickets of Nissanka and Asalanaka in quick succession to leave Lanka in trouble. It was a disciplined bowling effort by the Indian pacers in the first six overs. At the end of the first six overs, Sri Lanka made just 18 for 3.

Ravi Bishnoi coming into the playing dismissed Janith Liyanage putting Sri Lanka in serious trouble. Shanaka survived a close stumping call after so many replays, the umpire gave not out. Dinesh Chandimal and Shanaka steadied the ship before Harshal Patel got rid of Chandimal. Chandimal and Shanaka added 31 runs for the 5th wicket.

Kuldeep Yadav also featured in the playing XI and made a good impact with accurate bowling. Shanaka scored at a quick pace to complete fifty off 29 balls. On the other hand, Chamika Karaunate was not able to hit runs with ease. Thanks to a brilliant unbeaten 74 off 38 balls by Shanaka, Sri Lanka recovered to post 146 for 5. Shanaka and Karaunate added unbeaten 86 runs for the 6th wicket.

The Indian chase did not begin on a good note as they lost the wicket of Rohit Sharma cheaply again. Shreyas Iyer continued his brilliant form timing ball brilliantly. Sanju Samson opened the innings replacing Ishan Kishan. Sanju Samson and Iyer kept the momentum going on for India. At the end of the first six overs, India scored 47 for 1.

After the field restrictions, Samson fell caught by Chandimal off Karaunate. Samson and Iyer added 45 runs for the 2nd wicket. Deepak Hooda was promoted ahead doing a decent job with beautiful shots against Vandersay and pacers. Lahiru Kumara produced a superb yorker to dismiss Deepak Hooda. Hooda and Iyer added 38 runs for the 3rd wicket.

Shreyas Iyer looked comfortable and reached 3rd successive fifty this series off 29 balls. Vandersay went off the crease due to an injury. Venetaksh Iyer could not grab his chance caught by Jayawickrama. Shreyas Iyer and Ravindra Jadeja had no problems winning the match keeping the scoreboard ticking. Both Indian batters put on unbeaten 45 runs for the 5th wicket.

It was a dominating performance by the Indian team right through the series. With this win, the Indian team won 12 successive T20I matches after loss to New Zealand in World T20 2021.

India 148 for 4 in 16.5 overs (Shreyas Iyer 73*, Jadeja 22*, Kumara 2/39) beat Sri Lanka 146 for 5 in 20 overs ( Dasun Shanaka 74*, Avesh Khan 2/23, Siraj 1/22) by six wickets.

Under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, the Indian team whitewashed New Zealand, West Indies, and Sri Lanka in the T20I format. For his unbeaten 73, Shreyas Iyer was awarded the man of the match and also man of the series.
