India versus West Indies 2nd ODI: Indian bowlers help register series win
Thanks to a superb bowling effort by Prasidh Krishna and Co, the Indian team sealed the series with a convincing win over West Indies in the 2nd ODI match played at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on Wednesday. With this win, India earned 10 more points in the ICC ODI Super League.
West Indies stand-in captain Nicolas Pooran won the toss and
decided to field first. Indian captain Rohit Sharma came to open the innings
with Rishabh Pant. It was disciplined by Kemar Roach and Joseph with
consistent lines and lengths. Roach struck for West Indies dismissing Rohit
Sharma with a wide delivery taking the edge straight to Shai Hope. Pant looked
edgy with his timing and face some problems. On other hand, Kohli hit some
lovely strokes. At the end of the first 10 overs, India scored 37 for 1.
After the field restrictions, Oden Smith struck twice in the
same over getting wickets of Pant trying to pull but giving a simple catch to
Holder. Pant and Kohli added 30 runs for the 2nd wicket. Smith then
got rid of Kohli with a fuller delivery caught by Hope to leave India
struggling at 43 for 3. The West Indies pace bowler did not allow Indian
batters to score runs easily with the pitch having bounce. Shai Hope dropped a sitter
to dismiss KL Rahul.
KL Rahul and Surya Kumar Yadav looked in decent touch hitting
boundaries and taking singles. Rahul took the attack to West Indies spinners
keeping the scoreboard ticking. Things were looking decent for India, but a
miscommunication led to a run-out of KL Rahul. Rahul and Surya Kumar Yadav added
91 runs for the 4th wicket. Washington Sundar started his innings
with a lovely boundary.
Surya Kumar Yadav kept the scoreboard ticking and reached
his fifty off 70 balls. Sundar and Surya looked in decent touch before Surya
Kumar Yadav was caught by Joseph at short fine leg. Sundar and Surya Kumar
added 43 runs for the 5th wicket. The rest of the Indian batters
struggled as West Indies bowlers kept tight lines and lengths. Deepak Hooda
played a valuable knock before being dismissed in the 49th over.
Yuzvendra Chahal also scored important runs in the final over to help India
post 237 for 9.
Brandon King and Shai Hope struggled against the good, disciplined
bowling of Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur. King took on the Indian bowlers
with some lovely shots. Prasidh Krishna bowled with precision troubling King
and Shai Hope. Krishna eventually got the breakthrough for India dismissing
King caught by Pant. King and Hope added 32 runs for the opening wicket. Krishna
then got rid of Darren Bravo with a review by Rohit Sharma. The umpire gave it
not out and on review, it was overturned to out as hit the edge to leave West
Indies struggling. Krishna troubled Brooks with his pace and bounce going past
the edge of the bat. At the end of the first 10 overs, West Indies scored 38 for 2.
Shai Hope and Brooks struggled against disciplined Indian
bowling. The Indian bowlers took the advantage of consistent pressure as Chahal
got rid of Hope providing a simple catch to Surya Kumar Yadav at long-on. Nicolas
Pooran was given a free hit and smashed a six of it. Soon after, Krishna was
bought into the attack dismissing Pooran caught by Rohit Sharma at first slips.
Shardul Thakur produced a sharp bouncer to dismiss Jason
Holder caught by Hooda to leave West Indies struggling at 76 for 5. After the
initial struggle, Brooks looked in decent touch putting the bad deliveries away
for boundaries keeping West Indies back. Deepak Hooda got his maiden OD wicket
dismissing Brooks caught by Surya Kumar Yadav at long-on. Hooda 41 runs for the
6th wicket.
Akeal Hossain looked in brilliant touch taking advantage of
wet conditions along with Fabien Allen. Sundar could not judge the catch to
dismiss Akeal Hossain. Siraj eventually got rid of Allen caught by Pant. Allen
and Akeal Hossain added 42 runs for the 7th wicket. Thakur dismissed
well set Hossain to leave West Indies on the brink.
Odean Smith showed some intent with his power-hitting while
Joseph gave good support to him. The things looked bright for West Indies, but
Sundar bowled a superb over grabbing an important wicket of Smith caught by Kohli.
Smith and Joseph added 34 runs for the 9th wicket.
Krishna skittled out West Indies by dismissing Kemar Roach
to bowl out the visitors for 193. It was a brilliant bowling performance by
the Indian team after a disappointing performance with the bat.
India 237 for 9 in 50 overs (Surya Kumar Yadav 64, KL Rahul
49, Joseph 2/36, Odean Smith 2/29) beat West Indies 193 in 46 overs ( Brooks
44, Hossain 34, Prasidh Krishna 4/12, Thakur 2/41) by 44 runs.
For his figures of 4 for 12 in 9 overs, Prasidh Krishna was
awarded the man of the match. India seals the 3 matches ODI series with 1 match
remaining to be played on 11th Feb.
