India versus West Indies 3rd T20I: India whitewash West indies in a high scoring thriller
The Indian Cricket Team proved their worth again as they edged past West Indies in the 3rd T20I match played at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata on Sunday.
West Indies captain Kieron Pollard won the toss and decided
to field first. Ruturaj Gaikwad could not do much as he was dismissed caught by
Kyle Mayers at third man. Shreyas Iyer also was given a chance in this match
showed his intent right from word go. He along with Ishan Kishan hit a flurry of
boundaries to put pressure on West Indies bowlers. At the end of the first six
overs, India scored 43 for 1.
After the field restrictions, Iyer and Kishan kept the
scoreboard ticking taking singles and hitting occasional boundaries off Chase
and Hayden Walsh Junior. The leg spinner Walsh Junior struck for West Indies
dismissing Iyer trying to clear the boundary but was caught by Jason Holder at
long-off. Shreyas Iyer and Kishan added 53 runs for the 2nd wicket.
Soon after, Ishan Kishan's struggle ended as he was bowled by Chase.
Surya Kumar Yadav looked in decent touch keeping the
scoreboard ticking. On the other hand, Rohit Sharma came to bat at number 4
struggled with his timing. He could not sustain pressure and was bowled by
Dominic Drakes leaving India in some trouble. With India struggling at 93 for
4, Surya Kumar Yadav and Venetaksh Iyer upped the ante with some brilliant
hitting.
Surya Kumar Yadav was simply sensational with innovative
strokes against the spinners and pacers as well. Venetaksh Iyer also joined
keeping the momentum going on for India. Surya reached his fifty off 27 balls. Surya
smashed 3 sixes off Romario Shepheard in the last over and was caught at the
boundary to help India post 184 for 5. Surya and Venetaksh Iyer put on 91 runs
for the 5th wicket.
Deepak Chahar produced the magic getting rid of Kyle Mayers
via review for caught behind. The umpire gave it not out and on review, it was
overturned to out. Nicolas Pooran looked in brilliant touch putting Indian
bowlers under pressure. Deepak Chahar struck again to dismiss Shai Hope with a
lovely delivery leaving West Indies struggling.
Chahar went off the field due to a hamstring injury. Rovman
Powell and Nicolas Pooran took advantage put the inexperienced bowling line-up
under severe pressure. At the end of the first six overs, West Indies raced away to
68 for 2.
Harshal Patel was bought into the attack and got rid of
dangerous Rovman Powell with a lovely running catch by Shardul Thakur at fine
leg. Powell and Pooran added 47 runs for the 3rd wicket.
Venetaksh Iyer was given a chance to bowl and produced the
magic grabbing wickets of West Indies captain Kieron Pollard caught by Bishnoi
and then dismissed Jason Holder caught by Shreyas Iyer at long-on to leave West
Indies struggling.
The Indian catching was not up the mark as Ishan Kishan
dropped a tough chance to get rid of Pooran. Harshal Patel produced a magical
slower delivery deceiving Roston Chase leaving West Indies under immense
pressure.
Avesh Khan making his T20I debut struggled for rhythm as
Romario Shephard took the attack to him. Pooran impressed showing class and
completed his fifty off 39 balls. Venetaksh Iyer dropped a tough chance to
dismiss Shepard. Shardul Thakur did a brilliant job taking the important wicket
off well-set Pooran as Ishan Kishan took a good high catch. Pooran and Shepard added
48 runs for the 7th wicket.
Harshal Patel held
his nerves to dismiss the dangerous Shepard. Rohit Sharma took two lovely catches
as Indian inexperienced bowlers registered 17 runs win.
India 184 for 5 in 20 overs (Surya Kumar Yadav 65, Venetaksh
Iyer 35*, Shephard 1/50) beat West Indies 167 for 9 in 20 overs (Nicolas Pooran
61, Romario Shepard 29, Harshal Patel 3/22, Venetaksh Iyer 2/23) by 17 runs.
For his unbeaten 65 off 31 balls, Surya Kumar Yadav was
awarded the man of the match. He was also awarded the man of the series for his
107 runs.
The Indian team showed their class against a strong batting unit like West Indies. With this win, India became the number 1 ranked T20I side.
