Matt Henry career best figures in Test matches
Matt Henry registered his career-best figures during the 1st Day of the 1st Test match against visitors South Africa played at Hagley Oval, Christchurch on Thursday.
New Zealand captain Tom Latham won the toss and decided to
field first on a greenish pitch that had seam movement. Matt Henry came as a
replacement for Trent Boult produced the magic right from word go dismissing
South African captain Dean Elgar caught by Tim Southee. Henry kept the pressure on
the South African batters getting the wickets of Aiden Markram and Rassie Van
der Dussen in the same over to leave visitors struggling big time at 37 for 4.
Zubayr Hamza looked steady along with Kyle Verryne before
Henry dismissed Hamza providing an easy catch to Blundell leaving South Africa in
tatters. He then got rid of wicketkeeper Kyle Verryne via review for LBW. The
umpire gave not out but on review, it was overturned to out grabbing his 5th
wicket.
Henry kept the pressure on South African batters taking
wickets of Kagiso Rabada and Stuurman to end with figures of 7 for 23 in 15
overs with 7 maidens. It was an amazing bowling effort by Henry on a pitch that
had assistance for the pacers. Thanks to his career-best figures, New Zealand
bowled out South Africa for a paltry total of 95 runs right before the stroke
of tea break.
Matt Henry never allowed the South African batters to score
runs easily. The other pace bowlers Tim Southee, Kyle Jamieson, and Neil Wagner
also did a superb job for hosts. Kyle Jamieson, Southee, and Neil Wagner
grabbed 1 wicket each.
In reply, New Zealand lost 2 early wickets of Will Young and
Tom Latham. The South African catching was disappointing as they dropped four
catches. Conway and Henry Nicholls hit bad balls away for boundaries. Right
before the end of the play, Oliver dismissed Conway taking inside edge onto the
stumps. Conway and Nicholls added 75 runs for the 3rd wicket.
Matt Henry equals the record of best figures for a New
Zealand bowler in Test matches. Richard Hadlee grabbed figures of 7 for 23
against India in 1976 at Wellington. Henry 7 for 23 are the best figures for
New Zealand in Test matches against South Africa.
New Zealand ended the first day in a strong position with a lead of 21 runs. Henry Nicholls and nightwatchman Neil Wagner are currently at
the crease.
