Pro Hockey League 2022: Indian women’s team win a closely fought game
The Indian women’s team showed their skills to register a close-fought game against the visiting Spain side played at the Kalinga Stadium, Bhuvneshwar on Saturday.
Spain dominated the possession right from word go. They kept
the pressure on the Indian defense with attacking play but could not convert chances.
The visitors earned their first penalty corner but were well defended. Spain
kept pressure with consistent circle penetrations. The visitors missed a few chances.
At the end of the first quarter, the scores remained 0-0.
The second quarter began on a positive note for the visitors
as lack of defense by India helped Regu convert a simple field goal in the 18th
minute to give a 1-0 lead. Indian team showed their skills as a brilliant pass by
Navneet to Jyoti deflecting into a goal leveled the score at 1-1 in 20th
minute. Spain kept the pressure on Indian defense. Five minutes before the first
half, Spain was awarded a penalty corner but was well saved by Savita Punia. Spain maintained the possession. At the end of
the first half, India and Spain ended at 1-1.
It was a much more aggressive start by the Indian team in
the 3rd quarter as they put enough pressure on Spain's defense but
could not convert into goals. Spain's defense was solid not allowing Indians to
convert. At the end of the 3rd quarter, scores were still 1-1.
The final quarter saw the Spanish team put pressure on the
Indian team with continuous attacks, but the hosts defense did not allow the opposition
to score goals easily. Despite Vandana Katriya shot being well saved by the Spain
goalkeeper, Neha Goyal scored in the 52nd minute to give India a 2-1
lead. Spain kept the pressure, but the Indian defense remained solid enough
ensuring that the hosts end up winning.
With this win, the Indian women’s team registered their 3rd
successive win of the Pro Hockey League tournament so far. Before this, they
defeated China in Muscat with scorelines of 7-1 and 2-1.
Both teams will meet each other in the second leg tomorrow.
