Two Teams qualify for the first round of ICC Men’s World T20
Two spots were grabbed as Ireland and United Arab Emirates qualified for the first round of ICC Men’s World T20 to be played in Australia later this year. Known as ICC World T20 Cup Global Qualifiers A played in Oman.
Ireland was placed with United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and
Germany in Group A. They finished top of Pool A losing to only UAE in the
opening match. After that, Ireland defeated Bahrain and then put aside Germany
with a better net run rate than UAE and Bahrain.
All the matches were played in Oman, Muscat. The second
semi-finals saw Ireland defeat Oman with ease played at the Oman Cricket Academy
Ground, Turf 2, Muscat.
Oman captain Zeeshan Masqood won the toss and decided to field
first. Ireland lost 2 early wickets of Paul Stirling and Andy Balbirnie cheaply,
Hary Tector and Gareth Delany steadied the ship putting on 82 runs for the 3rd
wicket. Soon after, Ireland lost 3 quick wickets of Tector, Tucker, and Delany.
Andy McBrine kept Ireland to a competitive total with a quickfire 36 off 21 balls.
Ireland posted 165 for 7 at the end of 20 overs.
The Ireland bowlers never allowed Oman batters to score runs
easily and kept picking wickets at regular intervals. Simi Singh picked 3 while
Joshua Little, Craig Young, Andy McBrine grabbed 2 wickets each. Mark Adair
also took 1 wicket. Ireland bowled out Oman for 109 in 18.3 overs to register
emphatic 56 runs win. For Oman Shoaib Khan was the top scorer with 30.
For his all-round performance with bat and ball, Andy
McBrine was awarded the man of the match. It was an impressive performance by
the Ireland side who looked in complete control after posting a decent total.
This will be their second successive World T20 tournament
after they qualified for the World T20 tournament in UAE last year.
Ireland 165 for 7 in 20 overs (Gareth Delany 47, Andy McBrine
36*, Bilal Khan 3/23) beat Oman 109 in 18.3 overs (Shoaib Khan 30, Simi Singh
3/20, Andy McBrine 2/24) by 56 runs.
The United Arab Emirates showed their domination as they crushed
Nepal in the first semi-finals played at the Oman Cricket Academy Ground Turf
1, Muscat on Tuesday.
UAE captain Ahmed Raza won the toss and decided to bat
first. They lost an early wicket of Chirag Suri cheaply. Muhammad Waseem and
Arvind steadied the ship with brilliant hitting. Arvind kept the pressure on
Nepal bowling scoring a quickfire 46 off 23 balls. Arvind and Waseem added 66
runs for the 2nd wicket.
Muhammad Waseem held one end up as UAE lost wickets at
regular intervals. Rohan Mustafa and Ahmed Raza hit some vital blows, in the end, to help UAE post a massive total of 175 for 7.
In reply, Nepal was never in the hunt as UAE bowlers kept the pressure on the opposition with quick wickets in the first six overs. Dipendra Singh
Airee was the top scorer for Nepal. UAE bowled out Nepal for 107 in 18.4 overs.
UAE 175 for 7 in 20 overs ( Mohammad Waseem 70, Arvind 46,
Mukhiya 3/35, Bohara 3/46) beat Nepal 107 in 18.4 overs ( Dipendra Singh Airee
38, Ahmed Raza 5/19, Junaid Siddique 3/27) by 68 runs.
For his 5 for 19 in 4 overs, Ahmed Raza was awarded the man
of the match. UAE finished second in the points table due to less net-run rate
as compared to Ireland.
