ICC Women’s World Cup 2020 Match 21: Meg Lanning brilliance helps Australia continue their winning streak

 The Australian Women’s team continued their winning momentum as they registered a comfortable win in a high scoring affair against South Africa played at Basin Reserve, Wellington on Tuesday.

Australian captain Meg Lanning won the toss and decided to field first. It was a solid start by the South African openers as Laura Wolvaardt and Lizelle Lee took Australian bowlers. Wolvaardt continued her impressive run in the tournament hitting boundaries at will. Ellyse Perry went off the field due to an injury. At the end of the first 10 overs, South African openers made 41 for 0.

After the field restrictions, Lee and Wolvaardt kept putting pressure on the Australian bowlers. Alana King provided the breakthrough for Australia getting rid of Lizelle Lee to end a strong 88 runs opening partnership. Lara Goodall playing her first match this tournament struggled before being dismissed by Sutherland. Wolvaardt and Goodall added 30 runs for the 2nd wicket.

Sune Luus looked in sublime touch keeping the pressure on the Australian bowling. Wolvaardt completed her fifty off 86 balls. Gardner struck getting rid of well-set Wolvaardt. Wolvaardt and Luus added 91 runs for the 3rd wicket. Luus completed her fifty off 48 balls to put the South African team on course for a decent total. After losing 2 more quick wickets, Chole Tryon and Kapp provided quick-fire cameos to help South African women post 271 for 5. Both batters put on unbeaten 43 runs for the 6th wicket.

In reply, it was not an ideal start as the Australian team lost the early wicket of Alyssa Healy dismissed by Ismail. Meg Lanning showed intent in keeping the pressure on South African bowlers.

At the end of the first 10 overs, Australian women scored 44 for 1.  Tryon dismissed Haynes as du Preez took a stunning catch at deep midwicket. Haynes and Lanning added 31 runs for the 2nd wicket. Meg Lanning looked in sublime touch hitting boundaries at will. On other hand, Beth Mooney gave good support to Lanning. Lanning completed her fifty off 56 balls and put South African bowlers under pressure.

A superb piece of fielding by Sekhukhune got rid of Mooney. Mooney and Lanning added 60 runs for the 3rd wicket. Tahlia McGrath joined in with Lanning keeping the pressure on South African bowling. The South African fielding and catching were not up to the mark.

McGrath provided a quickfire cameo and made sure that Australia are on course for a win. Ismail struck to dismiss McGrath caught by Kapp. McGrath and Lanning added 93 runs for the 4th wicket.

Lanning continued her merry way and completed her century off 92 balls. Gardner was given a reprieve first ball by Lee. Tryon struck for South Africa dismissing Gardner. Gardner and Lanning added 43 runs for the 5th wicket.

Sutherland and Meg Lanning ensured that Australia chase down this target of 272 with ease. Both batters put on unbeaten 31 runs for the 6th wicket.

Australian women 272 for 5 in 45.2 overs (Lanning 135*, Ismail 2/33) beat South African women 271 for 5 in 50 overs (Laura Wolvaardt 90, Luus 52) by 5 wickets.

For her unbeaten 135 off 130 balls, Meg Lanning was awarded the player of the match. With this win, they are comfortably at the top of the points table with their sixth successive win.
