ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 Match 17: Bowlers lead West Indies women to a thrilling win

The West Indies bowlers showed great fight and character as they defeated Bangladesh in a low-scoring thriller played at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui on Friday.

Bangladeshi captain Nigar Sultana won the toss and decided to field first. West Indies openers Deandra Dottin and Hayley Mathews started off brightly. Jahanara Alam provided the breakthrough for Bangladesh dismissing Dottin with a lovely catch by Shamima Sultana. Mathews and Rashada Williams helped West Indies end the first 10 overs at 34 for 1.

Nahida Akter struck for Bangladesh getting the wicket of Mathews with a stunning catch by Nigar Sultana. It was a procession of wickets as Bangladeshi spinners kept the pressure on the West Indies batters. Akter dismissed Stafaine Taylor bowling around the legs. Salma Khatun made another breakthrough getting the wicket of Williams providing a simple catch to Fargana Haque.

A superb direct hit by Haque ended in the run-out of Chedean Nation to leave West Indies in big trouble. Rumana Ahmed got the wicket of Aaliyah Alleyne without opening his account. Chinelle Henry also perished cheaply providing a simple return catch to Salma Khatun to leave West Indies in massive strife at 70 for 7.

Shemaine Campbelle remained calm and kept the scoreboard ticking along with Afy Fletcher playing her first match of this tournament. Fletcher was brilliantly caught by Fahima Khatun to provide another important breakthrough. Fletcher and Campbell added 32 runs for the 8th wicket.

Karishma Ramharack also provided some resistance along with Campbell. Both kept the scoreboard ticking to help West Indies post a competitive total. Ramharack was run-out by Shamima Sultana trying to take a single. Ramharack and Campbelle added 36 runs for the 9th wicket. Campbelle impressed with her abilities completing her fifty off 105 balls and remained not out.

Chasing 141 runs to win, Bangladesh got off to the worst possible start as they lost the wicket of Shamima Sultana dismissed by Hayley Mathews. Sharmin Akther and Fargana Haque steadied the ship for Bangladesh before Mathews struck again dismissing Akther with a good catch by Dottin at slips. At the end of the first 10 overs, Bangladesh women scored 35 for 2.

Captain Nigar Sultana and Haque kept the Bangladeshi women in hunt with a decent partnership. Afy Fletcher turned the tables with a brilliant spell of bowling getting wickets of Haque, Rumana Ahmed, and Ritu Moni. Sultana and Haque added 30 runs for the 3rd wicket.

Salma Khatun and Nigar Sultana could not score runs against disciplined West Indies bowling. Mathews did the damage again dismissing Sultana via review for LBW. The umpire gave not out but on review, it was overturned due to the ball hitting the stumps. Mathews then produced a magical delivery to dismiss Fahima Khatun bringing back West Indies into the match.

West Indies captain Taylor struggled with her rhythm. Salma Khatun and Nahida Akther showed some fight keeping Bangladesh with a lovely chance of winning. Taylor provided the breakthrough dismissing Salma Khatun as Ramharack took a simple catch.

The match ebbed and flowed as Jahanara Alam looked in decent touch before Taylor dismissed her to leave Bangladesh on the backfoot. Nahida took most of the strike and made sure that Bangladesh are course for a win. Taylor got rid of Fariha Trisna helping West Indies win the match by 4 runs.

With this win, West Indies move up to third place in the points table with 3 wins. They will be looking to perform well against Pakistan and South Africa.

West Indies women 140 for 9 in 50 overs ( Shemaine Campbelle 53*, Salma Khatun 2/23, Nahida Akther 2/23) beat Bangladesh women 136 in 49.3 overs ( Nigar Sultana 25, Nahida Akther 25*, Hayley Mathews 4/15, Afy Fletcher 3/29) by 4 runs.

For her career-best ODI figures of 4 for 14 in 10 overs, Hayley Mathews was awarded the player of the match.
