ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 Match 19: England stay alive with a thrilling win over White Ferns

 The defending Champions England stay alive in the tournament with a thrilling win over White Ferns played at Eden Park, Auckland on Sunday.

England captain Heather Knight won the toss and decided to field first. The opening pair of Suzie Bates and Sophie Devine provided a solid start putting pressure on the England bowlers with positive intent. They never allowed settling keeping the scoreboard ticking. White Ferns opening pair scored 52 for 0 at the end of 10 overs.

Kate Cross was bought into the attack and dismissed dangerous Suzie Bates to end a strong 61 runs opening partnership. Amelia Kerr came to the crease and looked in brilliant touch along with Sophie Devine. Sophie Devine went off the field due to a back injury. Amelia Kerr was dismissed by Charlie Dean caught by Shurbsole. Kerr and Satterwhite added 35 runs for the 2nd wicket. Maddy Green joined in with Satterwhite keeping the pressure on England bowlers.

Charlie Dean dismissed Satterwhite to put White Ferns under pressure. Green and Satterwhite added 38 runs for the 3rd wicket. The England bowlers kept picking wickets at regular intervals making life tough for hosts. Sophie Devine came back to bat but was dismissed cheaply. Jess Kerr provided some resistance while Green completed her fifty off 72 balls. The England bowlers skittled out White Ferns for 203 in 48.5 overs.

Dani Wyatt and Tammy Beaumont provided a flying start Jess Kerr got rid of Wyatt with a good catch by Hannah Rowe. Tammy Beaumont and captain Heather Knight looked impressive putting pressure on the opposition bowlers. Lea Tahuhu produced a peach to dismiss Tammy Beaumont. At the end of the first 10 overs, England women made 53 for 2. Beaumont and Knight added 36 runs for the 2nd wicket.

Lea Tahuhu limped off the field due to an injury. The stand-in captain Amy Satterwhite rotated the bowlers brilliantly. Nat Sciver and Heather Knight kept the scoreboard ticking hitting boundaries and taking singles making life tough for hosts. MacKay dismissed England captain Knight via review for LBW. The umpire gave it out but on review, it was retained due to the umpire's call. Knight and Sciver added 45 runs for the 3rd wicket. Halliday struck immediately dismissing Amy Jones with a simple catch to Satterwhite to bring back hosts into the game. Sophie Dunkley looked composed putting pressure on the White Ferns bowlers.

Nat Sciver also kept the pressure on taking singles and hitting occasional boundaries. Amelia Kerr was tackled brilliantly by both batters. McKay provided a ray of hope for White Ferns dismissing Dunkley with a beauty. Dunkley and Sciver added 70 runs for the 5th wicket. Sciver showed intent and reached her fifty off 97 balls.

Jess Kerr provided a much-needed breakthrough dismissing Sciver. McKay dismissed Sophie Ecclestone and Kate Cross in quick succession to leave England in trouble. Katherine Brunt was run out trying to take the second run. Any Shurbsole kept her nerves hitting a boundary to help England register a thrilling 1 wicket win.

England women 204 for 9 in 47.2 overs (Nat Sciver 61, Dunkley 33, McKay 4/34) beat New Zealand women 203 in 48.5 overs (Maddy Green 52*, Devine 41, Kate Cross 3/35, Sophie Ecclestone 3/41) by 1 wicket.

For her 61 off 108 balls, Nat Sciver was awarded the player of the match award. England women have now 2 wins with 2 matches still remaining.
