ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 Match 20: Pakistan women dents West Indies hopes
The Pakistan women’s team ended their 18-match losing streak as they defeated West Indies in a rain-curtailed match played at Seddon Park, Hamilton on Monday.
After a long delay due to heavy rains, Pakistani captain
Bismah Maharoof won the toss and decided to field first. The powerplay overs
were reduced to 4 overs each. Amin Ameen kept the pressure on the West Indies
opening batters of Hayley Mathews and Deandra Dottin.
At the end of the first 4 overs, West Indies women scored just
19 runs. Fatima Sana got the breakthrough in her opening over getting rid of
Mathews caught by Muneeba Ali. Dottin showed some intent against the Pakistan bowlers.
Anam Amin bowled with tight lines and lengths not allowing Dottin and West Indies
Taylor to score runs easily on a pitch that had turn.
The Pakistan catching was not great enough as they dropped
two chances early on. Nida Dar was bought into the attack and dismissed the
dangerous Dottin with a simple return catch. The Pakistani spinners kept on
pressure on West Indies batters not allowing them to rotate the strike. Dar
struck getting rid of Shemaine Campbelle who scored an unbeaten fifty in the last
match against Bangladesh. Omamia Sohail got into the attack getting rid of
Chedan Nation to leave West Indies struggling.
Dar grabbed the wickets of Kyica Knight and then Chinelle
Henry to put West Indies under immense pressure. West Indies captain Stefanie
Taylor struggling innings ended providing a simple return catch to Nashra Sandhu.
Afy Fletcher and Aaliyah Alleyne showed intent to help the West Indies team post 89
for 7. It was a superb bowling effort by the Pakistan spinners not allowing the
opposition to score runs easily.
In reply, Muneeba Ali playing her first match of the World
Cup showed intent putting the West Indies bowlers under pressure. On the other
hand, Sidra Ameen made batting look easy keeping the scoreboard ticking. At the end
of the first 4 overs, Pakistan openers made 17 for 0.
After the field restrictions, Fletcher dismissed Ameen
trying to hit a big shot. Muneeba Ali and Bismah kept the pressure on the West
Indies bowlers by hitting boundaries and rotating the strike that frustrated the
opposition. Ali was given a reprieve as was dropped and then missed a golden
chance to run out.
In the next over, Ali was dismissed providing an easy catch
to Dottin. Muneeba and Bismah added 35 runs for the 2nd wicket. Omamia
Sohail and Bismah looked confident keeping the chase on course. The West Indies
bowlers lacked the intent to make life tough for Pakistan. Both batters helped
Pakistan chase down this target with 7 balls to spare.
Bismah and Sohail added unbeaten 33 runs for the 3rd
wicket. It was a very disciplined performance by the Pakistan team as they
restricted West Indies to a modest total and then chased down this target
comfortably.
Pakistan women 90 for 2 in 18.5 overs ( Muneeba Ali 37, Sohail
22*, Shekara Selman 1/15, Fletcher 1/23) beat West Indies women 89 for 7 in 20
