ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 Match 25: Australian team finish league stage unbeaten
The Australian women’s team ended the league stage on a winning note as they defeated spirited Bangladesh side played at Basin Reserve, Wellington on Friday.
Due to heavy rains, the match was reduced to 43 overs side.
Australian captain Meg Lanning won the toss and decided to field first. Murshida
Khatun and Sharmin Akther provided a steady start against top quality bowling
of Australia. Gardner got the breakthrough for Australia getting rid of Murshida
with a good catch by Haynes. It was a decent opening partnership between
Murshida and Sharmin as they put on 33 runs. With the field restrictions
reduced to 9 overs, Bangladesh women scored 38 for 1.
The Australian bowlers kept tight lines and lengths not
allowing the Bangladeshi batters to score runs easily. Rumana Ahmed and Lata
Mondal put on 33 runs for the 5th wicket. Lata Mondal and Salma
Khatun provided some resistance hitting some occasional boundaries trying to
put pressure on Australian bowling. Lata Mondal was stumped by Megan Schutt in
the final over. Lata Mondal and Salma Khatun added 36 runs for the 6th
wicket. Bangladesh posted a modest total of 135 for 6 in 43 overs.
Alyssa Healy showed intent against the Bangladesh bowlers
while Haynes struggled to hit the gaps. Salma Khatun got an initial breakthrough
dismissing Healy with a good catch by Jahanara Alam at deep square leg. Khatun
then produced a beauty to get rid of Australian captain Meg Lanning. At the end
of the first field restrictions, Australian women made 26 for 2.
Khatun struck for the third time dismissing Haynes with a
good catch by Fargana Hoque to leave the Australian team on backfoot. Beth Mooney
looked in brilliant touch hitting boundaries and keeping the scoreboard
ticking. Tahlia McGrath failed to contribute dismissed by Nahida Akther.
Ash Gardner took the attack to Bangladesh bowlers along with
Mooney. Rumana Ahmed produced a good delivery to dismiss Gardner leaving
Australia struggling. Beth Mooney looked at ease and kept the pressure on the
spirited Bangladesh team.
Sutherland also contributed against the disciplined Bangladesh
spin bowling line-up. Mooney completed her fifty off 60 balls and ensured that
Australia reach the target with ease. Mooney and Sutherland added unbeaten 66
runs for the 6th wicket.
Australian women 136 for 5 in 32.1 overs/43 overs (Beth
Mooney 66*, Sutherland 26*, Salma Khatun 3/23) beat Bangladesh women 135 for 6
in 43 overs (Lata Mondal 33, Jess Jonassen 2/13) by 5 wickets via the DLS method
For her unbeaten 66 off 75 balls, Beth Mooney was awarded
the player of the match. Australian women end the league stage with 7 wins.
