ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 Match 28: Indian women’s team knocked out in a thriller
The Indian women’s team journey ended with a heartbreaking loss against the South African in the last league match of ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 played at Hagley Oval, Christchurch on Sunday.
Indian captain Mithali raj won the toss and decided to bat
first. It was an aggressive start as Shafali Verma put Shabnim Ismail on the
backfoot with a flurry of boundaries. Smriti Mandhana also looked in decent touch
taking singles and hitting occasional boundaries. Shafali made the batting at
ease making life tough for the South African bowlers. At the end of the first
10 overs, Indian women raced to 68 for 0.
After the field restrictions, Verma continued her aggressive
approach and completed her fifty off 40 balls. It was an unfortunate end as
Mandhana and Verma were involved in a mix-up resulting in the run-out of Verma.
The Indian openers added 91 runs laying a strong foundation for a massive
total. Yastika Bhatia was cleaned bowled in an unfortunate manner bowled by Chole
Tryon. Smriti Mandhana showed intent in keeping the pressure on the South African
bowlers while Mithali Raj took a few balls to settle.
Mandhana completed her fifty off 69 balls and maintained the
momentum for the Indian team along with Mithali Raj. Raj upped the ante with
attacking strokes making life tough for the opposition. A superb catch by Chole
Tryon ended the innings for Smriti Mandhana. Mandhana and Raj added 80 runs for
the 3rd wicket. Harmanpreet Kaur joined in with Raj keeping the
momentum going on keeping the scoreboard ticking.
Raj also completed her fifty off 69 balls and kept the
pressure on the South African bowlers. Harmanpreet Kaur also showed intent not to allow the opposition to settle. Klass dismissed Raj in an attempt to score quick
runs with a good catch by Tryon. Raj and Kaur added 58 runs for the 4th
wicket. The Indian batters including Pooja Vastrkar, Richa Ghosh could not
score quick runs. Sneha Rana was given out twice by the umpire but on review, it
was overturned to not out. The Indian women’s team posted 274 for 7 at the end
of 50 overs.
Harmanpreet Kaur produced a brilliant run-out to dismiss
Lizelle Lee. Laura Wolvaardt and Lara Goodall showed intent in keeping the
scoreboard ticking. At the end of the first 10 overs, South African women scored
51 for 1.
After the field restrictions, Wolvaardt showed intent and completed
fifty off 44 balls. Goodall also kept the momentum going hitting boundaries with
ease. Gakywad dismissed Goodall with a stumping to end 125 runs partnership for
the 2nd wicket.
Harmanpreet Kaur bowling for the first time in this World
Cup produced a stunning delivery to dismiss well-set Wolvaardt. Luus and du
Preez kept the pressure on the Indian bowling taking singles and hitting occasional
boundaries. Kaur dismissed Luus via review for LBW. The umpire gave not out but
on review, it was overturned to out. Luus and Preez added 37 runs for the 4th
wicket. Kapp and du Preez steadied the ship for South Africa putting pressure
on Indian bowlers. A superb throw by Kaur and a run-out by Ghosh resulted in a run-out of Kapp. Kapp and du Preez added 47 runs for the 5th wicket.
Chole Tryon put pressure on the Indian bowlers with some
vital runs. Gakywad dismissed Tryon caught and bowled to leave the match hanging. The
Indian fielding and catching were not great enough. With 7 runs needed off the
last over, Chetty was run-out while attempting the second run. Du Preez was
caught by Harmanpreet Kaur but deemed no-ball. Du Preez completed fifty off 60
balls. Du Preez hit the winning run helping South Africa register a thrilling 3
wicket win.
South African women 275 for 7 in 50 overs ( Laura Wolvaardt
80, du Preez 52*, Kaur 2/42) beat Indian women 274 for 7 in 50 overs ( Smriti Mandhana
71, Raj 68, Ismail 2/42) by 3 wickets.
For her unbeaten 50, du Preez was named the player of the
match. With this loss, the Indian women’s team has been knocked out.
