Badminton Asia Championship 2022 Day 3: Sindhu and doubles pair progress into the quarterfinals

 It was another mixed day for the Indian contingent as 2 of them moved into the quarterfinals of the prestigious Badminton Asia Championship 2022 played in Manila, the Philippines on Thursday.

PV Sindhu had no problems defeating Yue Yann Jasyln in two straight games. It was a good start by Yue putting enough pressure on the Indian equalizing score at 6-6. The unseeded player took a slender 11-9 lead at the interval. After the break, Sindhu showed great fight and courage to put Yue service under pressure. The Indian dominated the opposition and registered a comfortable 21-16 win in the first game.

The second game saw both players taking alternate points before Sindhu took an 11-8 lead at the interval. After the break, it was one-way traffic as the Indian never looked in trouble and won the game easily at 21-16 despite Yue's efforts. With this win, Sindhu moves into the quarterfinals. She will play He Bingjao of China.

Sindhu will be looking to continue her impressive run as she defeated, He in the bronze medal match at the Tokyo Olympics.

Saina Nehwal went down to Wang Zhi of China in three games. It was a dominating start for Saina in the first game putting enough pressure on the Chinese before winning the first game easily at 21-12. The Chinese made a strong comeback in the 2nd game with Saina committing lots of unforced errors. Zhi showed great domination winning it easily by 21-7 to force the match into the decider.

The decider saw both players taking alternate points before the Chinese showed domination taking an 11-8 lead at the interval. After the break, Wang did not look back and won the game by 21-13.

The men’s doubles pairing of Satwiksairaj RankiReddy and Chirag Shetty defeated the Japanese pair of Akira Koga and Taichi in two straight games. Japanese pair showed some stiff competition against RankiReddy and Chirag, but the Indian pair held their nerves to win the first game at 21-17.

Both pairs played aggressive badminton at the start of 2nd game. Satwik and Chirag put enough pressure on the Japanese pair winning it easily by 21-15 in just 43 minutes to move into the quarterfinals. They will now face Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi of Malaysia.

Indian men’s singles challenge ended as Kidambi Srikanth lost 81st ranked Weng of China in three thrilling games. It was a very close fought first game initially as both players took alternate points. Srikanth held his nerves to take a slender 11-10 lead at the interval. After the break, Weng put enough pressure on the Indian taking points in succession, and won the first game by 21-16.

The second game saw Kidambi Srikanth committing unforced errors initially before making a strong comeback to level the score at 8-8. At the mid-game interval, Srikanth took an 11-8 lead. Despite the Chinese making efforts, the Indian held his nerves to the 2nd game at 21-17 to force the match into the decider.

The third game showed great fight and courage by both players. Weng put enough pressure on the Indian to take an 11-6 lead at the interval. There were long rallies as Srikanth made a strong comeback to reduce the gap before Weng won the decider by 21-17 to move into the quarterfinals.
