Badminton Asia Championship 2022 Day 5: PV Sindhu assured medal, Chirag and RankiReddy lose
It was good for the Indian shuttlers as PV Sindhu made it into the semi-finals of the prestigious Badminton Asia Championship 2022 played in Manila, the Philippines on Friday.
PV Sindhu defeated He Bingjao of China in a three-game
thriller. It was a dominating start by the Indian keeping the pressure on the
Chinese not allowing her to play her game. At the mid-game interval, Sindhu led
11-2. The Indian continued attacking shots as He committed lots of unforced
errors and won the first game easily at 21-9.
The second game started on an even keel before Bingjao put
enough pressure on the Indian shots. Sindhu then made a strong comeback as both
players took alternate points till 10-10. Bingjao took a slender 11-10 at the
interval. After the break, the Chinese showed aggression as Sindhu committed a lot of unforced errors. He Bingjao won the second game easily at 21-13 to force
the match into the decider.
Both players started the third game taking 2 points each
before Sindhu showed her domination and never allowed, He Bingjao any chance.
At the mid-game interval, the Indian led 11-5. After the break, Sindhu
maintained the lead before He Bingjao showed great fighting spirit with points
in succession. The match looked even as the Chinese maintained the pressure
reducing the game to 1 point. He hit the shot into the net as Sindhu erupted into
emotions and won by 21-19 to move into the semi-finals. This will be her second
medal at the Asian Championship after 2014.
She will take on Akane Yamaguchi of Japan in the semi-finals.
With this win, Sindhu assured herself of a bronze medal.
The men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj RankiReddy and Chirag
Shetty lost to Aaron Chia and Soh of Malaysia in three games. It was a good start
for both pairs as they took alternate points till 5-5. The Indian dominated the
play keeping the momentum taking a commanding 11-7 lead. After the break, Chirag
and Satwik maintained domination winning the first game 21-12.
In the second game, the Indian pair committed a lot of unforced
errors as the Malaysian took advantage of it. Aaron and Soh took an 11-5 lead at
the interval. After the break, Chirag and Satwik tried to put pressure but the
Malaysian pair won the second game easily at 21-14.
The Malaysian showed domination after being 2-2. Satwik and
Chirag committed unforced errors. It was a superb play by Aaron and Soh taking a commanding 11-4 lead. After the break, the Indian pair fought back strongly to
reduce the gap to 16-18. Chirag committed a costly error as the Malaysian team won
the decider by 21-16 to move into the semi-finals.
