IPL 2022 Match 29: David Miller brilliance gives Gujarat Titans thrilling win
Gujarat Titans snatched victory out of nowhere in a thrilling encounter against Chennai Super Kings played at MCA Stadium, Pune on Sunday.
GT stand-in captain Rashid Khan won the toss and decided to
field first. It was an ideal start for Gujarat Titans as Mohammed Shami
dismissed Robin Uthappa with lovely delivery. The umpire gave not out but on
review, it was overturned to out. Ruturaj Gaikwad who looked in poor form this season
so far showed intent to hitting boundaries. Alazzari Joseph playing his first game
for GT got rid of Moeen Ali to leave CSK in trouble. At the end of the first six
overs, Chennai Super Kings made 39 for 2.
Gaikwad and Rayudu kept the scoreboard ticking making life tough
for GT bowlers. At the end of the first timeout, CSK made 59 for 2. Gaikwad and
Rayudu upped the ante-hitting boundaries not allowing GT bowlers to settle.
Gaikwad looked impressive completing fifty off 37 balls. Both kept the momentum
going for CSK hitting boundaries and making life tough for GT bowlers. Joseph struck
eventually to break the partnership dismissing Rayudu caught by Vijay Shankar.
Rayudu and Gaikwad added 92 runs for the 3rd wicket. With that
wicket, the second timeout was called at 124 for 3.
Yash Dayal dismissed well-set Gaikwad to bring back Gujarat
Titans into the match. Shivam Dube and Ravindra Jadeja struggled to time the
ball before Jadeja smashed big shots at Ferguson in the final over. Dube was
run-out while trying to take a second run. Dube and Jadeja added 38 runs for the
5th wicket. Chennai Super Kings posted 169 for 5 in 20 overs.
Chasing 170 runs to win, it was a shaky start for Gujarat
Titans as Mukesh Chaudhary dismissed Shubman Gill in the first over. Maheesh
Theekshana got rid of Vijay Shankar with a lovely catch by MS Dhoni to leave GT
in trouble. Theekshana took his 2nd wicket dismissing Abhinav
Manahor creating enough pressure on the opposition. David Miller showed intent
right from the word go while Wriddhiman Saha never looked comfortable. At the
end of the first six overs, Gujarat Titans made 37 for 3.
CSK dismissed Wriddhiman Saha to leave Gujarat Titans in
massive trouble. Saha and Miller added 32 runs for the 4th wicket.
At the end of the first timeout, GT made 55 for 4. Rahul Tewaita struggled big-time
before Dwayne Bravo got him with a slower delivery caught by Jadeja. Miller and
Tewaita added 39 runs for the 5th wicket. The pressure was high on
Gujarat Titans batsmen, but Miller showed his explosive nature completing fifty
off 28 balls.
At the end of the second timeout, Gujarat Titans scored 108 for
5. Dwayne Bravo troubled Miller and Rashid Khan. It was brilliant hitting by
Rashid Khan smashing him for 25 runs including 3 sixes and 1 boundary.
Bravo helped Chennai Super Kings comeback into the match
getting rid of Rashid Khan and then Joseph off successive deliveries. Rashid
and Miller added 70 runs for the 6th wicket. With 13 runs required,
Miller was caught by Dube at short-third man but was deemed as no-ball. Miller
and Ferguson ran 2 runs to help Gujarat Titans win a thrilling match by 3
wickets.
Gujarat Titans 170 for 7 in 19.5 overs (Miller 94*, Rashid
Khan 40, Dwayne Bravo 3/23, Maheesh Theekshana 2/24) beat Chennai Super Kings
169 for 5 in 20 overs (Gaikwad 73, Rayudu 46, Joseph 2/34) by 3 wickets.
For his unbeaten 94 off 51 balls, David Miller was named the
man of the match. With this win, Gujarat Titans move to the top of the points table
with 5 wins.
