IPL 2022 Match 33: MS Dhoni’s magic leads CSK to a thrilling win
It was an amazing game of cricket as CSK registered a last-ball win over Mumbai Indians played at DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai on Thursday.
CSK captain Ravindra Jadeja won the toss and decided to
field first. It was an ideal start as Mukesh Chaudhary dismissed Rohit Sharma
and Ishan Kishan in the opening over to put Mumbai Indians on the backfoot.
Surya Kumar Yadav showed intent with lovely strokes keeping the scoreboard
ticking. Ravindra Jadeja dropped a simple chance to dismiss Brevis. Soon after,
Mukesh got rid of Brevis to leave Mumbai Indians in big trouble.
Surya Kumar Yadav and Tilak Verma steadied the ship for
Mumbai Indians. At the end of the first six overs, MI scored 42 for 3. Mitchell
Santer making his entry into playing XI bowled with tight lines and lengths.
Santer got rid of Surya Kumar caught by Mukesh Chaudhary leaving MI in massive
trouble. At the end of the first timeout, MI made 52 for 4.
Tilak Verma and Hrithik Shokeen making his IPL debut impressed
rotating the strike. Dwayne Bravo dismissed Shokeen caught by Uthappa. Verma and
Shokeen added 38 runs for the 5th wicket. With that wicket, the
second timeout was called at 85 for 5.
Chennai Super King's catching was not great as Ravindra
Jadeja dropped two chances while MS Dhoni missed a stumping chance. MS Dhoni's
fielding placement looked perfect as Pollard provided a simple catch to Dube.
Bravo then got the wicket of Sams to leave Mumbai Indians in big trouble at 120
for 7. Tilak Verma and Jaydev Unadkat provided some entertainment putting
pressure on CSK bowlers. Tilak looked composed completing fifty off 42 balls.
Shivam Dube dropped another chance as Unadkat and Verma added unbeaten 35 runs
for the 8th wicket. Thanks to Verma’s 50 and quickfire cameo by Unadkat,
Mumbai Indians posted 155 for 7.
Chasing 156 runs to win, Gaikwad was dismissed off the very
first ball providing a simple catch to Tilak Verma. Mitchell Santer came at
number 3 and looked edgy while Uthappa provided momentum. Sams produced a
lovely bouncer to dismiss Santer leaving CSK in trouble. Rayudu and Uthappa
showed intent putting the bad balls away for boundaries. At the end of the first
six overs, CSK ended at 46 for 2. With that, the first timeout was called.
Uthappa survived a return caught bowl chance as Shokeen took
the catch but the third umpire ruled it not out. Rayudu and Uthappa kept the scoreboard ticking
before Unadkat struck getting rid of Uthappa caught by Brevis. Rayudu and
Uthappa added 50 runs for the 3rd wicket. Shivam Dube struggled with
his timing, but Rayudu kept one side intact. A lovely diving catch by Ishan
Kishan resulted in the wicket of Dube. With that, the second timeout was called
at 88 for 4.
The pressure was on the CSK batsmen as Jadeja struggled while
Rayudu showed intent. Sams got the wicket of Rayudu caught by Pollard at
long-on. Riley Meredith dismissed Jadeja to put CSK under immense pressure. Dwaine
Pretorius looked in great touch smashing Unadkat for 14 runs in the 18th
over. The match went right down the wire as Bumrah was taken for 11 runs.
Jaydev Unadkat got the wicket of Pretorius via review for
LBW. The umpire called it not out but on review, it was overturned to out. Pretorius
and Dhoni added 33 runs for the 7th wicket. With 4 runs required, Dhoni
smashed a boundary to help CSK register a thrilling win.
CSK 156 for 7 in 20 overs (Rayudu 40, Uthappa 30, Dhoni 28*,
Sams 4/30) beat MI 155 for 7 in 20 overs (Tilak Verma 51*, Surya Kumar Yadav
32, Mukesh Chaudhary 3/19) by 3 wickets.
For his figures of 3 for 19 in 3 overs, Mukesh Chaudhary was
named the man of the match award.
