IPL 2022 Match 34: Jos Butler’s brilliance gives RR win in high scoring match
Rajasthan Royals held their nerves as they defeated Delhi Capitals in a high-scoring thriller played at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Friday.
Delhi Capitals captain Rishabh Pant won the toss and decided
to field first. It was a cautious start by Jos Buttler and Devdutt Paddikal
before Buttler put enough pressure on DC bowlers with aggressive strokes. At
the end of the first six overs, Rajasthan Royals made 44 for 0. Buttler just upped
the ante with big shots keeping the momentum going. At the end of the first timeout, RR
scored 78 for 0.
Buttler showed intent and completed fifty off 36 balls. Paddikal
also kept hitting shots to not allow Delhi Capitals bowlers to settle. Buttler continued
his superb form in this tournament smashing Delhi Capitals to all parts of the
ground. Paddikal joined the party with the first fifty this season off 31 balls. RR
openers kept on scoring runs at will. Khaleel Ahmed got a breakthrough by dismissing
Paddikal with a review for LBW. The umpire gave it not out but on review, it was
overturned to out. Paddikal and Buttler best partnership for RR in IPL with 155
runs on the board. With that, the first timeout was called.
Sanju Samson showed intent right from the word go taking on
Khaleel Ahmed. Buttler completed his third century off 57 balls. Samson and
Buttler kept the momentum going for RR hitting boundaries at will. Mustzifur Rahman
eventually got Samson’s wicket caught by Warner at long-on. Buttler and Samson
added 47 runs for the 2nd wicket. Samson showed his class by
smashing Shardul Thakur for 20 runs helping Rajasthan Royals post a massive total
of 222 for 2.
Chasing a mammoth total of 223 runs to win, Warner and Prithvi
Shaw began the innings aggressively keeping pressure on RR bowlers. Prasidh
Krishna deceived Warner with a change of pace caught by Samson. Warner and Shaw
added 43 runs in quick time to lay a strong foundation. Ashwin struck in his
first over dismissing Sarfaraz Khan providing a simple catch to Prasidh Krishna.
At the end of the first six overs, Delhi Capitals scored 55 for 2.
Obed McCoy struggled in his first over as he conceded extras
while Shaw and Pant took the attack to him. Shaw and Pant maintained momentum
for Delhi Capitals keeping the scoreboard ticking. At the end first timeout, DC
made 95 for 2.
R Ashwin struck dismissing Shaw providing an easy catch to
Boult. Shaw and Pant added 51 runs for the 3rd wicket. Chahal and
Ashwin troubled Delhi Capitals batsmen, especially Lalit Yadav. After being
dropped by Chahal at fine-leg, Pant could not survive another chance as Paddikal
took a lovely high catch. Chahal got his first wicket dismissing Axar Patel
trying to hit a big shot. Shardul Thakur was brilliantly run-out while trying
to the second run. With that wicket, the second timeout was called at 157 for 6.
Lalit Yadav and Rovman Powell provided some hope with brutal
hitting. Prasidh Krishna bowled a stunning 19th over giving away zero
runs and grabbed the wicket of Lalit Yadav. Lalit and Powell added 30 runs for
the 7th wicket.
Rovman Powell looked in brilliant hitting mood smashing 3
successive sixes including a controversial no-ball call that was not given. McCoy
held his nerves to help Rajasthan Royals register 15 run win.
Rajasthan Royals 222 for 2 in 20 overs (Buttler 116, Paddikal
54, Rahman 1/43) beat Delhi Capitals 207 for 8 in 20 overs (Shaw 37, Lalit Yadav
37, Prasidh Krishna 3/22, Ashwin 2/32) by 15 runs.
For his 116 off 65 balls, Jos Buttler was named the man of
the match award. With this win, RR moved to the top of the points table with 5 wins
and a better run rate.
