IPL 2022 Match 35: Gujarat Titans beat KKR in a thrilling encounter

 Gujarat Titans held their nerves as they continued their impressive form with a thrilling win over Kolkata Knight Riders in low scoring thriller played at DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai on Saturday.

Hardik Pandya won the toss and decided to bat first as the team winning the toss decided to set a target. It was not an ideal start as Shubman Gill fell cheaply as he was caught down the leg by Tim Southee. Hardik Pandya promoted himself at number 3 looked in decent touch putting bad deliveries away for boundaries. Wriddhiman Saha also kept the momentum going for Gujarat Titans taking on Umesh Yadav. At the end of the first six overs, Gujarat Titans made 47 for 1. With that, the first timeout was called at 47 for 1.

Hardik Pandya kept the pressure back on KKR bowlers keeping the scoreboard ticking hitting boundaries and taking singles making life tough for the opposition. Saha struggled with his timing and was not able to rotate the strike. Pandya looked in brilliant form keeping the momentum going. Umesh Yadav struck for KKR dismissing Saha who gave a simple catch to Venetaksh Iyer at backward point. Saha and Pandya added 75 runs for the 2nd wicket.

Hardik led from the front completing his 3rd fifty off 36 balls. David Miller also showed intent in keeping the scoreboard ticking keeping the momentum going. At the end of the second timeout, Gujarat Titans ended at 102 for 2. Shivam Mavi produced the wicket for KKR dismissing Miller providing an easy catch to Umesh Yadav. Miller and Pandya added 50 runs for the 3rd wicket. Tim Southee struck twice in the same over getting rid of Hardik Pandya and Rashid Khan.

Andre Russell bowled a stunning final over grabbing 4 wickets dismissing Abhinav Manahor, Lockie Ferguson, Rahul Tewaita, and then dismissing Yash Dayal of the final ball to restrict Gujarat Titans at 156 for 9 in 20 overs.

Chasing 157 runs to win, it was not an ideal start for KKR as they lost 2 quick wickets of Sam Billings, Sunil Narine in the first two overs. Shami dismissed both Billings and Narine with quick deliveries. Ferguson took a lovely low catch. GT captain Hardik Pandya set attacking fields not allowing KKR batsmen to settle. Lockie Ferguson got the wicket of Nitish Rana with a review. The umpire gave not out but Pandya decided to review the decision and it was overturned leaving KKR in big trouble at 16 for 3.

Shreyas Iyer looked in trouble against top-quality Gujarat Titans pace bowling. At the end of the first six overs, KKR made 34 for 3. Yash Dayal struck to get rid of Shreyas Iyer caught by Saha to leave KKR in deep trouble. Rinku Singh and Venetaksh Iyer steadied the ship hitting occasional boundaries making life tough for GT bowlers. At the end of the first timeout, KKR ended at 50 for 4.

Singh and Iyer kept the momentum going before Yash Dayal struck for GT dismissing Singh with a lovely delivery. Singh and Iyer added 63 runs for the 5th wicket. A superb catch by Venetaksh Iyer by Manahor ended in the wicket of Venetaksh to leave KKR in deep trouble.

Andre Russell was given a reprieve as he was caught at fine leg, but it was deemed as no-ball. He took the charge putting the bad deliveries away for sixes against Dayal. Rashid Khan got rid of Shivam Mavi cleaned up to leave KKR in trouble at 108 for 7. With that wicket, the second timeout was called.

Umesh Yadav was given out by the umpire but on review, it was overturned to not out as it was missing the stumps. Russell showed trust in his power keeping momentum going for KKR. The match ebbed and flowed.

Joseph grabbed the important wicket of Russell with a lovely catch by Ferguson at fine leg. Russell and Umesh Yadav added 37 runs for the 9th wicket. Gujarat Titans held their nerves to register an 8-run win.

Gujarat Titans 156 for 9 in 20 overs (Hardik Pandya 67, Miller 27, Russell 4/5, Southee 3/24) beat Kolkata Knight Riders 148 for 8 in 20 overs ( Russell 48, Rinku Singh 35, Rashid Khan 2/22, Shami 2/20) by 8 runs.

For his figures of 2 for 22 in 4 overs, Rashid Khan was named the man of the match award. With this win, Gujarat Titans consolidated their top spot.
