IPL 2022 Match 38: Shikhar Dhawan’s knock helps Punjab Kings register close-fought win
Punjab Kings showed their character as they defeated Chennai Super Kings in a high-scoring encounter played at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Monday.
CSK captain Ravindra Jadeja won the toss and decided to
field first. Shikhar Dhawan showed intent right from the word go putting CSK bowlers
under pressure. On other hand, Mayank Agarwal struggled with disciplined bowling.
Theekshana got the breakthrough by dismissing Mayank providing an easy catch to Dube.
Agarwal and Dhawan added 37 runs for the opening wicket. At the end of the first six
overs, PBKS scored 37 for 1.
CSK bowlers kept tight lines and lengths not allowing PBKS
batsmen to score runs easily. At the end of the first timeout, PBKS made 63 for 1.
Rajapaksa and Dhawan put enough pressure on CSK bowlers hitting boundaries and
taking singles with ease. CSK ground fielding and catching was not up to the
mark. Rajapaksa showed intent on keeping the momentum going on for PBKS. Dhawan
looked confident completing fifty off 37 balls. At the end of 2nd
timeout, PBKS scored 123 for 1.
Dwayne Bravo struck an important blow dismissing Rajapaksa
caught by Dube. Rajapaksa and Dhawan added 110 runs for the 2nd
wicket. Liam Livingstone played a brilliant cameo taking on Dwayne Bravo before
being caught by Mukesh Chaudhary at short third man. Jonny Bairstow was
dismissed off the last ball while trying to take the second run. Dhawan played
a brilliant knock remaining not out helping Punjab Kings post 187 for 4 in 20
overs.
Chasing 188 runs to win, it was a terrible start as they
lost an early wicket of Robin Uthappa with a simple catch by Mayank Agarwal.
Mitchell Santer struggled badly not able to time the ball. Ruturaj Gaikwad also
looked out of touch. Arshdeep Singh dismissed Santer bowled around legs to
leave CSK in trouble. At the end of the first six overs, CSK scored just 32 for 2.

got rid of Shivam Dube taking the inside edge onto the stumps. Ruturaj Gaikwad and
Rayudu showed intent against Rahul Chahar keeping the momentum going for CSK.
At the end of the first timeout, CSK scored 64 for 3.
Rayudu was in sublime form putting the bad deliveries away
for boundaries and sixes. Rabada was bought into the attack and got rid of Gaikwad.
Gaikwad and Rayudu added 49 runs for the 4th wicket. Ravindra Jadeja
looked out of touch not able to time. Rayudu showed a ray of stroke smashing
Sandeep Sharma for 23 runs and completing fifty off 28 balls to keep CSK hopes
alive.
At the end of the second timeout, CSK made 141 for 4. Rabada and
Arshdeep Singh bowled some sensational deliveries not allowing Rayudu and
Jadeja to hit big shots. Rabada produced a superb delivery to dismiss Rayudu
hitting the pad onto the stumps. Rayudu and Jadeja added 64 runs for the 5th
wicket.
Rishi Dhawan bowled a decent 20th over giving
away just 15 runs as CSK required 27 runs including a wicket of MS Dhoni.
Punjab Kings restricted CSK to 176 for 6 in 20 overs.
Punjab Kings 187 for 4 in 20 overs ( Dhawan 88*, Rajapaksa
42, Bravo 2/42) beat CSK 176 for 6 in 20 overs ( Rayudu 78, Gaikwad 30, Rabada
2/23, Rishi Dhawan 2/39) by 11 runs.
For his unbeaten 88 off 59 balls, Shikhar Dhawan was awarded
the man of the match award.
