IPL 2022 Match 40: Gujarat Titans beat Sunrisers Hyderabad in a last ball thriller
Gujarat Titans continued their winning streak as they registered a last-ball win over Sunrisers Hyderabad in a high-scoring match played at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Wednesday.
Gujarat Titans captain Hardik Pandya won the toss and
decided to field first. Abhishek Sharma started off brightly putting the bad
balls away for boundaries while Kane Williamson looked out of touch. Mohammed
Shami got breakthrough dismissing Williamson with a lovely delivery. Rahul
Tripathi looking in sublime touch put the GT bowlers under pressure along with
Sharma. Shami struck again to get rid of Tripathi via review for LBW. The
umpire gave not out but on review, it was overturned as out to leave SRH in
trouble. At the end of the first six overs, SRH made 53 for 2.
At the end of the first timeout, SRH ended at 59 for 2. Abishek
Sharma and Markram kept the momentum going for SRH putting bad deliveries away
for boundaries. Sharma looked in decent touch completing fifty off 33 balls
while Markram also showed his class. Joseph produced a good delivery to dismiss
well-set Abhishek Sharma. With that wicket, the second timeout was taken at 140
for 3. Abhishek Sharma and Markram added 96 runs for the 3rd wicket.
Gujarat Titans bowlers made a strong comeback as Shami got
the wicket of Pooran providing a simple catch to Shubman Gill. Markram completed
fifty off 35 balls and looked good for more runs. Yash Dayal got the wicket of
Markram caught by Miller at long-on. Washington Sundar was brilliantly run out
with a superb direct hit by Joseph.
Shashank Singh and Marco Jansen did the damage in the final
over smashing 4 sixes off Lockie Ferguson. Both added unbeaten 33 runs off 11
balls to help Sunrisers Hyderabad post 195 for 6 in 20 overs.
Chasing 196 runs to win, Wriddhiman Saha and Shubman Gill
provided a decent start to the innings with Saha looking in brilliant touch. At
the end of the first six overs, GT scored 59 for 0. It was a decent start for GT openers
as Gill looked out of touch.
Gujarat Titans openers ended the first timeout at 68 for 0.
Saha put the bad deliveries away for boundaries completing fifty off 28 balls. Umran
Malik produced a stunning delivery to get an opening breakthrough dismissing Gill.
Saha and Gill added 69 runs for the opening wicket.
Malik produced some sharp deliveries to Hardik Pandya and
eventually got him out. Saha and Miller steadied the ship for GT before Malik
produced stunning delivery to dismiss Saha. Saha and Miller added 37 runs for
the 3rd wicket. At the end of the second timeout, GT scored 135 for 3.
Malik then got wickets of Miller and Abhinav Manohar with
lovely deliveries to put GT under pressure. Rahul Tewaita and Rashid Khan rescued
the innings for Gujarat Titans with some serious hitting.
Rahul Tewaita was given out by the umpire but on review, it
was overturned to not out as it was pitching outside leg. With 26 runs required
off the last over, Rahul Tewaita and Rashid Khan produced magical performances. Marco
Jansen could not execute the yorkers as Khan hit a six off the final ball to
help Gujarat Titans register a thrilling 5-wicket win. Rashid and Rahul added unbeaten
59 runs off 25 balls.
Gujarat Titans 199 for 5 in 20 overs ( Saha 68, Rahul Tewaita
40*, Umran Malik 5/25) beat Sunrisers Hyderabad 195 for 6 in 20 overs (
Abhishek Sharma 65, Markram 56, Shami 3/39) by 5 wickets.
For his career-best figures of 5 for 25 in 4 overs, Umran
Malik was awarded the man of the match award.
With this win, Gujarat Titans move up to the top of the points table
with 7 wins.
