IPL 2022 Match 44: Mumbai Indians open their account with a win
The five-time IPL champions, Mumbai Indians opened their account in IPL 2022 with a win over Rajasthan Royals played at DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai on Saturday.
MI captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and decided to field
first. Jos Buttler was given a reprieve as Daniel Sams could not judge catch at
the boundary. Paddikal looked impressive taking on Sams hitting 3
boundaries in an over. The left-handed batsman Paddikal was also given a reprieve
as Tim David dropped a simple chance. Hrithik Shokeen struck for MI dismissing
Paddikal providing an easy catch to Pollard. At the end of the first six overs, Rajasthan
Royals made 40 for 1.
Kartikeya coming as a replacement bowled tight lines and lengths
getting rid of Samson caught by Tim David to leave RR struggling. At the end of the first timeout, RR scored 64 for 2. Daryl Mitchell looked out of sorts not able
to time the ball while Buttler also struggled as MI bowlers kept tight lines
and lengths. Mitchell and Buttler did not look comfortable as they ended the 2nd
timeout at 87 for 2.
Sams provided the breakthrough by dismissing Mitchell caught by
Rohit Sharma at extra cover. Mitchell and Buttler added 37 runs for the 3rd
wicket. Buttler showed his class by smashing 4 sixes off Shokeen completing fifty
off 48 balls. Shokeen eventually got rid of Buttler caught by Surya Kumar
Yadav. Buttler and Hetymer added 35 runs for the 4th wicket.
Meredith dismissed the last match hero for RR Riyan Parag with a simple catch to
Sams. Ravichandran Ashwin provided much-needed impetus by smashing a quickfire cameo.
After Ashwin was dismissed in the final over, Shimron Hetymer did not take a
single and could not hit big shots. Rajasthan Royals posted 158 for 6 in 20
overs.
Chasing 159 runs to win, Ishan Kishan looked in great touch
right from the word go putting pressure on RR bowlers. R Ashwin got a big wicket
of Ashwin that bounced providing an easy catch to Mitchell. Trent Boult dismissed
Ishan Kishan to leave MI in trouble. At the end of the first six overs, MI made 41
for 2. With that, the first timeout was called.
Surya Kumar Yadav and Tilak Verma showed intent on keeping the
scoreboard ticking. Both MI batsmen looked in decent touch making life tough
for RR bowlers with due conditions. At the end of 2nd timeout, MI scored
113 for 2.
Surya completed fifty off 36 balls to maintain the momentum. He
eventually was dismissed caught by Parag long on. Surya and Tilak added 81
runs for the 3rd wicket. Tilak Verma also perished in the next over
caught by Parag. Tim David showed intent and made life easier for Mumbai
Indians chase. On other hand, Pollard struggled with his timing. Kuldeep Sen
dismissed Kieron Pollard with a lovely catch by Mitchell at fine leg. Pollard
and David added 33 runs for the 5th wicket. Sams hit the winning runs
with six to help MI win the match.
Mumbai Indians 161 for 5 in 19.2 overs ( Surya Kumar 51,
Tilak 35, Ashwin 1/21) beat Rajasthan Royals 158 for 6 in 20 overs ( Buttler
67, Riley Meredith 2/24) by 5 wickets.
For his 51 off 39 balls, Surya Kumar Yadav was named the man
of the match award.
