Hero Asia Cup 2022 Super 4’s: India drew with Malaysia in thrilling match
It was a superb match of hockey as India drew with Malaysia in their 2nd Super 4’s match played at GBK Stadium, Jakarta on Sunday.
The first quarter saw both teams putting enough pressure on the other team's defense. Malaysia earned their penalty corner, but India decided to
review the decision and the umpire changed it to free out. The Malaysians kept
enough pressure on the Indian defense as they earned their second penalty corner
which was well saved by Suraj. The Indian team was down to 10 men as Manjeet was given a green card.
It was another brilliant display of hockey by Malaysia as Razi
Rahim converted a penalty corner into a goal in the 12th minute to
give them a 1-0 lead. Indian team maintained some possession but could not convert
chances into goals. At the end of the first half, Malaysia led 1-0.
The Indian team-maintained attack but the Malaysian defense remained
solid. Malaysia earned another penalty corner as Razi Rahim converted it into a
goal in the 21st minute to give them a 2-0 lead. Suraj Karkera
provided some brilliant saves as the Malaysian team-maintained momentum. Malaysia was
awarded another penalty corner, but the Indian team reviewed the decision as it hit
the gloves of Manjeet. At the end of the first half, Malaysia led 2-0.
The Indian team replaced Suraj with Pankaj as the goalkeeper.
They were awarded their first penalty corner as Vishnukant Singh converted from
a rebound shot by the goalkeeper in the 32nd minute to reduce the
gap to 1-2. Malaysia kept the pressure but the Indian defense remained alert.
Malaysia was awarded another penalty corner as Razi Rahim hit a brilliant shot
but was well saved by Pankaj. Thanks to a superb effort by SV Sunil and Uttam
Singh, India was awarded a penalty corner but the shot from SV Sunil went wide. The
Indian team played much better hockey in the 3rd quarter as Malaysia
still led 2-1 at the end of the third quarter.
The fourth quarter began well for the Indian team as they
earned two back-to-back penalty corners. Malaysian goalkeeper made a brilliant
save to deny India the equalizer. Brilliant teamwork by Pawan Rajbhar and a pass to SV Sunil helped them level the score at 2-2 in the 53rd minute. Nilam
Sanjeep converted a beautiful penalty corner in the 56th minute
helping India take a 3-2 lead. Razi Rahim scored his third goal in this match with a superb penalty corner going through the legs of Pankaj in the 56th
minute to level the scores at 3-3.
Suraj came back into the goalpost replacing Pankaj. Malaysia
was awarded another penalty corner, but India decided to review the decision
and it was overruled. India kept calm and maintained possession, but Manider
was given a green card. Indian team had last effort but could not receive the
ball as the match ended at 3-3 draw.
It was an amazing game of hockey as India came from a 0-2
down and then took a 3-2 lead. With this draw, India moved to number 2nd
spot in the points table.
They will now play South Korea in the final league match on
31st May.
