IPL 2022 Eliminator: RCB through in a high scoring match
Royal Challengers Bangalore held their nerves to defeat Lucknow Super Giants in a high-scoring affair played at the iconic Eden Gardens, Kolkata on Wednesday.
Due to a slight drizzle, the toss was delayed. LSG captain KL
Rahul won the toss and decided to field first. It was an ideal start as Mohsin
Khan got rid of RCB captain Faf du Plessis without opening his account. Rajat Patidar
showed intent right from the word go putting pressure on LSG bowlers while
Kohli played the role of second fiddle. Patidar smashed Krunal Pandya in his first
over. At the end of the first six overs, RCB made 52 for 1. With that, the first
timeout was called.
Patidar continued his aggressive approach making life tough
for LSG bowlers. Avesh Khan provided the breakthrough getting rid of Kohli giving a simple catch to Mohsin Khan at third man. Patidar and Kohli added 66 runs for
the 2nd wicket. Patidar kept the momentum going for RCB reaching
fifty off 28 balls. LSG made a comeback as Ravi Bishnoi dismissed Maxwell
caught by Evin Lewis at deep square leg. Mahipal Lomror looked in decent touch
putting some pressure on LSG bowlers while Patidar rotated the strike. At the
end of the second timeout, RCB ended 115 for 3.
Right after the timeout, Bishnoi struck dismissing Lomror with a
good catch by KL Rahul to leave RCB on the backfoot. Dinesh Karthik survived a
close LBW shout given not out but on review, it was retained due to the umpire’s
call. LSG struggled with their fielding as KL Rahul dropped Dinesh Karthik
while Patidar was dropped twice by Mohsin Khan and Deepak Hooda. Patidar
hammered Bishnoi after the drop chance smashing him for 27 runs to put enough
pressure on LSG bowlers.
It was an expectational batting display by Patidar reaching
his maiden IPL century off 49 balls. Dinesh Karthik reviewed the decision for
LBW but there was an inside edge. Dinesh Karthik took the attack in the last
over along with Patidar to blast away the LSG bowling. Karthik and Patidar
added unbeaten 92 runs off 41 balls helping Royal Challengers Bangalore post a mammoth
total of 207 for 4.
Chasing 208 runs to win, Quinton de Kock was dismissed
cheaply in the first over itself caught by du Plessis. Manan Vohra looked
impressive with his shots against Hazlewood while KL Rahul looked solid enough.
Hazlewood eventually got Vohra caught by Shahbaz Ahmed to leave LSG in some
trouble.
Hasaranga's fielding was sensational as he stopped lovely
boundaries. KL Rahul took the attack to Siraj in the final over of the powerplay.
At the end of the first six overs, LSG made 62 for 2.
Harshal Patel went off the field due to an injury. Deepak
Hooda and KL Rahul showed intent to score runs but RCB bowlers did not allow
them to score runs easily. At the end of the first timeout, LSG ended at 84 for 2.
Harshal Patel was bought into the attack and troubled both
LSG batsmen. Hooda and KL Rahul were not able to hit big shots against disciplined
RCB bowling. At the end of the second timeout, LSG scored 109 for 2.
Hooda went after Hasaranga and put enough pressure on RCB
bowling. KL Rahul led from the front reaching fifty off 43 balls. After being
smashed for runs, Hasaranga shattered the stumps of Hooda to break 96 runs
partnership for the 3rd wicket. KL Rahul showed his class and
maintained the momentum with lovely shots keeping LSG on course.
Harshal Patel struggled with the first two deliveries but produced
a stunning comeback to dismiss Marcus Stoinis as Patidar took a good catch at
the boundary. Stoinis and Rahul added 36 runs for the 4th wicket.
Josh Hazlewood dented LSG chase getting wickets of KL Rahul
and Krunal Pandya off successive deliveries.
Despite Chameera’s hitting, Harshal Patel held their nerves
to give RCB a 14-run win. It was a superb effort by the batsmen on a good
batting pitch.
RCB 207 for 4 in 20 overs (Rajat Patidar 112*, Karthik 37*,
Mohsin Khan 1/25) beat LSG 193 for 6 in 20 overs ( KL Rahul 79, Hooda 45,
Hazlewood 3/43, Patel 1/25) by 14 runs.
For his unbeaten 112 off 54 balls, Rajat Patidar was named
the man of the match award. They will play next Rajasthan Royals in qualifier 2
on the 27th at Ahmedabad.
