IPL 2022 Finals: Hardik’s Pandya all-round show gives GT title on first attempt

 The table-toppers Gujarat Titans produced a sensational performance to register the IPL title on the first attempt against Rajasthan Royals played in front of a jam-packed crowd at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on Sunday.

RR captain Sanju Samson won the toss and decided to bat first. Jaiswal looked in decent touch putting pressure on Gujarat Titans bowlers while Jos Buttler continued his superb form. Yash Dayal provided the breakthrough for GT getting rid of Jaiswal caught by Sai Kishore to end a quickfire partnership of 31 runs. At the end of the first six overs, RR moved to 44 for 1.

Buttler and Samson kept the momentum going for RR taking singles and hitting occasional boundaries. At the end of the first timeout, RR scored 59 for 1. GT captain led from the front grabbing the important wicket of Samson as Sai Kishore took a good running catch. GT bowlers piled on the pressure with dots against Paddikal. As a result, Paddikal provided a simple catch to Mohammed Shami to leave RR in trouble. Hardik Pandya got the big fish of Buttler putting RR under immense pressure. At the end of the second timeout, RR scored 84 for 4.

Hardik Pandya took a simple return catch to dismiss Shimron Hetymer derailing RR innings. Sai Kishore grabbed another important wicket of R Ashwin in an attempt to smash a big shot due to dot ball pressure. Riyan Parag, Trent Boult, and McCoy provided some important runs at the end helping Rajasthan Royals post 130 for 9 in 20 overs. Parag did not give strike in the last overs, but GT bowlers kept it tight. Shami produced a stunning yorker to dismiss Parag.

Chasing 131 runs to win, Shubman Gill got a reprieve as Yuzvendra Chahal dropped a dolly when he was on 0. Prasidh Krishna and Trent Boult bowled with venom troubling GT openers. Krishna got rid of Saha with beauty. RR bowlers kept it tight making life tough for Gill and Wade. Trent Boult grabbed the 2nd wicket getting rid of Wade caught by Parag at midwicket to put GT under some pressure. Gujarat Titans scored 31 runs for the loss of 2 wickets at the end of 6 overs.

Hardik Pandya looked confident with strokes while Gill kept the scoreboard ticking. At the end of the first timeout, GT scored 48 for 2. Gill was given another chance as Shimron Hetymer dropped catch the chance. Hardik and Gill kept the scoreboard ticking making life tough for RR bowlers. Ashwin was bought late into the attack as both batsmen showed caution against Chahal. Chahal produced a peach of a delivery to dismiss Hardik Pandya caught by Jaiswal at slips. Hardik and Gill added 63 runs for the 3rd wicket. David Miller provided the momentum with some lusty blows keeping GT on course for maiden title. At the end of 2nd timeout, GT ended at 109 for 3.

Shubman Gill hit the winning runs with a six to help Gujarat Titans win the match by 7 wickets. Miller blasted away RR bowlers and remained not out. Gill and Miller added unbeaten 47 runs for the 4th wicket.

Gujarat Titans 133 for 3 in 18.1 overs (Gill 45*, Hardik Pandya 34, Miller 32*, Boult 1/14) beat Rajasthan Royals 130 for 9 in 20 overs ( Buttler 39, Jaiswal 22, Hardik Pandya 3/17, Sai Kishore 2/20) by 7 wickets.

For his career-best figures in IPL with 3 for 17 and 34 off 30 balls, Hardik Pandya was named the man of the match award.
