IPL 2022 Match 59: Mumbai Indians knock out Chennai Super Kings with a dominating win
The five time-Champions Mumbai Indians knocked out Chennai Super Kings in a one-sided affair played at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Thursday.
Mumbai Indian captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and decided
to field. Due to a power shortage, the DRS was not available for 1.4 overs. It
was an ideal start for MI as Daniel Sams got rid of Devon Conway on a ball that
missed the leg stumps. Sams then produced the magic Moeen Ali with a good catch
by Shokeen. Jasprit Bumrah trapped Robin Uthappa to leave CSK in big trouble at
5 for 3. Sams then got rid of CSK opener Ruturaj Gaikwad putting them under
immense pressure. Riley Meredith showed his skills by getting rid Rayudu to leave
CSK in dire straits. At the end of the first six overs, CSK looked in massive
trouble at 32 for 5. At the end of the first timeout, CSK scored 35 for 5.
Meredith got rid of Shivam Dube cheaply to put more misery
on CSK. MS Dhoni showed some promise-keeping the scoreboard ticking with lovely
shots. Karthikeya got wickets of Dwayne Bravo and Simarjeet Singh in quick
succession to leave CSK struggling big time. Bravo and Dhoni added 39 runs for
the 7th wicket. With the wicket of Simarjeet, the second timeout was
taken at 80 for 8.
MS Dhoni took most of the strike before trying to take a single
Ishan Kishan produced a superb direct hit to run out Mukesh Chaudhary to bowl
out CSK for a modest total of 97.
Chasing 98 runs to win, Ishan Kishan went cheaply again with
a lovely delivery by Mukesh Chaudhary. Rohit Sharma looked in decent touch
putting the bad deliveries away for boundaries. Simarjeet Singh got the wicket
of Rohit caught by Dhoni to leave MI in trouble. Mukesh Chaudhary got the
wickets of Sams and then debutant Tristan Stubbs off successive deliveries. It
could have been another wicket for CSK as the umpire gave out but on review, it
was overturned to not out as it hit the pad. At the end of the first six overs, MI
scored 36 for 4.
Shokeen and Tilak Verma looked composed keeping the
scoreboard ticking making life tough for CSK bowlers. At the end of the first
timeout, MI made 55 for 4.
Moeen Ali dismissed Shokeen to break the partnership of 48 runs.
Tim David and Tilak Verma completed the job for MI winning it by 5 wickets with
31 balls to spare.
Mumbai Indians 103 for 5 in 14.5 overs (Tilak Verma 34*, Mukesh
Chaudhary 3/23) beat Chennai Super Kings 97 in 16 overs ( MS Dhoni 36*, Daniel
Sams 3/16, Kumar Kartikeya 2/22) by 5 wickets.
For his figures of 3 for 16 in 4 overs, Daniel Sams was
named the man of the match award. With this loss, CSK has been knocked out of
the tournament.
