IPL 2022 Match 60: PBKS thrash RCB to stay alive in the tournament

 Punjab Kings was at their best as they dominated Royal Challengers Bangalore to stay alive in the tournament played at Brabourne Stadium, CCI, Mumbai on Thursday.

RCB captain Faf du Plessis won the toss and decided to field first. Jonny Bairstow looked in great touch right from the word putting enough pressure on RCB bowlers especially Josh Hazlewood hitting him for 22 runs in his first over. On the other hand, Dhawan kept the pressure with attacking shots making life tough for RCB. Glenn Maxwell eventually struck getting rid of Dhawan trying to sweep and was castled. Dhawan and Bairstow added 60 runs. Bairstow kept the pressure on Siraj with some lovely shots completing fifty off 21 balls. At the end of the first six overs, PBKS raced away to 83 for 1.

Soon after the timeout, Hasaranga got rid of Bhaunka Rajapaksa with a lovely delivery caught by Harshal Patel. Liam Livingstone showed intent against the RCB spinners especially Shahbaz Ahmed while Bairstow kept the scoreboard ticking with singles. At the end of the first timeout, PBKS raced away to 101 for 2. Shahbaz Ahmed struck to dismiss dangerous Bairstow with a simple catch to Siraj. Liam Livingstone kept the scoreboard ticking with big shots while Mayank Agarwal also looked impressive. Harshal Patel provided a breakthrough by getting rid of Mayank caught by Hasaranga at a backward point. Mayank and Livingstone added 51 runs for the 4th wicket. At the end of the second timeout, PBKS ended at 163 for 4.

Hasaranga bowled a lovely delivery to get rid of Jitesh Sharma to stem the flow of runs. Livingstone kept his calm reaching fifty off 35 balls. He then blasted away Hazlewood for 23 runs in the 19th over. Harshal Patel looked impressive getting wickets of Livingstone, Rishi Dhawan, and then Rahul Chahar was run out. It was a superb batting effort as PBKS posted 209 for 9 in 20 overs.

Chasing 210 runs to win, it was an aggressive start by Virat Kohli putting enough pressure on the PBKS bowlers. Kohli was dismissed in an unfortunate manner taking gloves as PBKS decided to review the decision. Kohli and du Plessis added quickfire 33 runs. Rishi Dhawan struck twice in one over getting wickets of du Plessis via review. The umpire gave not out but on review, it was overturned to out as it hit the edge. Dhawan then got the wicket of Mahipal Lomror with a simple catch to Shikhar Dhawan to leave RCB on the backfoot. RCB scored 44 for 3 at the end of the first six overs.

Rajat Patidar and Glenn Maxwell kept the momentum going for RCB hitting boundaries and rotating the strike. At the end of the first timeout, RCB scored 84 for 3.

Patidar and Maxwell maintained the momentum for RCB showing their class. Rahul Chahar struck for PBKS dismissing Patidar caught by Shikar Dhawan. Patidar and Maxwell added 64 runs for the 4th wicket. Brar struck in the next over to leave RCB on the backfoot. It was a tall ask as RCB kept losing wickets at regular intervals. At the end of the second timeout, RCB ended at 118 for 5.

Kagiso Rabada looked threatening and made important breakthroughs. RCB never looked in the chase as PBKS bowlers kept taking wickets at regular intervals. PBKS won the match easily by 54 runs.

PBKS 209 for 9 in 20 overs (Livingstone 70, Bairstow 66, Harshal Patel 4/34) beat RCB 155 for 9 in 20 overs ( Maxwell 35, Patidar 26, Rabada 3/21, Rishi Dhawan 2/36) by 54 runs.

For his 66 off 29 balls, Jonny Bairstow was named the man of the match award.
