IPL 2022 Match 61: Andre Russell’s show gives KKR a thumping win

Thanks to a superb performance by Andre Russell, Kolkata Knight Riders kept their slim hopes alive of reaching the playoffs stage as they defeated SRH in a one-sided encounter played at MCA Stadium, Pune on Saturday.

KKR captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and decided to bat first. It was not an ideal start as Venetaksh Iyer’s poor form continued dismissed by Marco Jansen. Ajiyanka Rahane and Nitish Rana put enough pressure on SRH bowling with positive shots. At the end of the first six overs, KKR scored 55 for 1.

Umran Malik showed his class by dismissing Nitish Rana caught by Shashank Singh. Rana and Rahane added 48 runs for the 2nd wicket. A superb catch by Shashank Singh at the boundary resulted in the wicket of Rahane to leave KKR in trouble. At the end of the first timeout, KKR scored 78 for 3.

Malik struck once again getting the wicket of Shreyas Iyer to leave KKR on the backfoot. T Natarajan produced a superb delivery as Rinku Singh could not review the decision. Andre Russell and Sam Billings showed responsibility for keeping the scoreboard ticking. KKR ended the 2nd timeout at 129 for 5.

Russell and Billings maintained the pressure on the SRH bowlers. The experienced Bhuvneshwar Kumar troubled both KKR batsmen and dismissed Billings caught by Williamson. Russell and Billings added 63 runs for the 6th wicket. Andre Russell showed his power smashing Washington Sundar for 3 sixes in 20th over helping KKR post 177 for 6 in 20 overs.

Chasing 178 runs to win, Kane Williamson could not rotate the strike while Abhishek Sharma showed intent with some lovely shots. Russell got rid of struggling Williamson to end 30 runs opening partnership. Williamson made 9 off 17 balls. At the end of the first six overs, SRH made 31 for 1.

A superb reflex return catch by Tim Southee ended the innings for Rahul Tripathi. With that wicket, the first timeout was called at 54 for 2. Varun Chakravarthy and Narine kept the pressure on SRH batsmen with disciplined bowling. Varun got rid of Abishek Sharma to leave SRH in big trouble. Narine dismissed Nicolas Pooran with a simple return catch making life tough for the opposition. Aiden Markram looked decent enough before Umesh Yadav struck in his final over. At the end of the second timeout, SRH ended at 101 for 5.

Shashank Singh was given out by the umpire but on review, it was overturned too not out. Russell’s dream night continued by getting wickets of Sundar and Marco Jansen. KKR bowlers kept it tight and restricted SRH to 123 for 8.

KKR 177 for 6 in 20 overs (Russell 49*, Billings 34, Malik 3/33) beat SRH 123 for 8 in 20 overs (Abhishek Sharma 43, Markram 32, Russell 3/22) by 54 runs.

For his 49 off 28 balls and 2 for 22, Russell was named the man of the match award. With this win, KKR moved to 12 points.
