IPL 2022 Match 64: Mitchell Marsh and bowlers lead DC to a comfortable win

Delhi Capitals proved their worth as they defeated Punjab Kings in a low-scoring match played at DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai, on Monday.

PBKS captain Mayank Agarwal won the toss and decided to field first. It was an ideal start as Liam Livingstone dismissed Warner on the first ball providing an easy catch. Sarfaraz Khan opened the innings and put enough pressure with positive shots making life tough for PBKS bowlers. Mitchell Marsh also looked impressive. Arshdeep Singh got the much-needed breakthrough by dismissing Sarfaraz Khan for a quickfire cameo. Sarfraz Khan and Marsh added 51 runs for the 2nd wicket. At the end of the first six overs, DC made 59 for 2.

Lalit Yadav was promoted at number 4 but was not able to keep the scoreboard ticking against disciplined PBKS bowling. At the end of the first timeout, DC made 74 for 2. It could have a dismissal, but Arshdeep Singh overstepped. Arshdeep Singh finally got rid of Lalit caught by Rajapaksa at backward point. Lalit and Marsh added 47 runs for the 3rd wicket. Livingstone struck twice in quick succession getting wickets of Pant stumped and then Rovman Powell to leave DC in trouble. At the end of the second timeout, DC scored 116 for 5.

Mitchell Marsh kept the momentum going for DC completing fifty off 40 balls. Kagiso Rabada got his first wicket today dismissing Marsh caught by Rishi Dhawan. Marsh and Axar Patel added 37 runs for the 6th wicket. It was a superb bowling effort by PBKS bowlers as they restricted Delhi Capitals to 159 for 7 in 20 overs.

Chasing 160 runs to win, Jonny Bairstow showed intent right from the word go putting DC bowlers under pressure. Anrich Nortje provided the breakthrough getting rid of Bairstow caught by Axar Patel. Bairstow made quickfire 28 off 15 balls and put on 38 runs. Shikhar Dhawan survived a close LBW shout given not out but on review, it was retained due to the umpires' call. Shardul Thakur struck twice in the same over getting rid of Rajapaksa and then Shikhar Dhawan leaving PBKS on the backfoot. Lait Yadav missed a golden run-out chance as there was a mix-up between Dhawan and Rajapaksa. At the end of the first six overs, PBKS made 54 for 3. With that, the first timeout was called.

Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel broke the backbone of the PBKS batting line-up. Axar dismissed Mayank Agarwal while Kuldeep Yadav got wickets of Livingstone and Harpreet Brar in quick succession to leave PBKS in big trouble. Axar then dismissed Rishi Dhawan with a lovely delivery. With that wicket, the second timeout was taken at 82 for 7.

Jitesh Sharma provided some late hitting while Rahul Chahar was not able to give strike on regular basis to Jitesh. There was resistance by Sharma, but Thakur got his wicket putting DC on course for a win. Jitesh and Rahul added 41 runs for the 8th wicket. With 26 runs required off the last over, Rahul Chahar could not take PBKS cross line.

DC 159 for 7 in 20 overs (Mitchell Marsh 63, Sarfaraz Khan 32, Livingstone 3/27, Arshdeep Singh 3/37) beat PBKS 142 for 8 in 20 overs ( Jitesh Sharma 44, Bairstow 28, Shardul Thakur 4/36) by 17 runs.

For his figures of 4 for 36 in 4 overs, Shardul Thakur was named the man of the match award. With this win, DC moved to fourth place along with a positive run rate.
