IPL 2022 Match 67: RCB stay alive in the tournament with a comphrensive win
Royal Challengers Bangalore's hopes for the playoff stage to stay alive with a comprehensive win over table-toppers Gujarat Titans played at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Thursday.
Gujarat Titans captain Hardik Pandya won the toss and
decided to bat first. Wriddhiman Saha looked impressive with his shots putting
Siddharth Kaul under pressure in the very opening over. Josh Hazlewood struck
to get rid of Shubman Gill thanks to a special one-handed catch by Glenn Maxwell
at slips.
Matthew Wade showed intent to put enough pressure on RCB
bowlers. Wade was left frustrated as he decided to review the decision, but it
was upheld. At the end of the first six overs, GT made 38 for 2. Hardik Pandya came
at number 4 and took few balls making life tough for RCB bowlers. A sensational
piece of a direct hit by Faf du Plessis resulted in the run-out of Saha. With
that wicket, the first timeout was called at 62 for 3.
Prabhudessai dropped a simple chance to get rid of Hardik
Pandya. Harshal Patel went off the field due to an injury to his right hand.
David Miller and Pandya put enough pressure on RCB bowlers showing intent, especially Miller. At the end of the second timeout, GT ended at 122 for 3.
A superb reflex catch by Hasaranga ended the innings for
Miller. Miller and Hardik Pandya added 61 runs for the 4th wicket.
Hazlewood struck to dismiss Rahul Tewaita with a faint edge to leave GT in
trouble. Hardik Pandya looked in decent touch completing fifty off 42 balls. He
and Rashid Khan displayed hitting abilities to help Gujarat Titans post 168 for
5. Both put on unbeaten 36 runs for the 6th wicket. Hardik and
Rashid showed intent against Kaul and Hazlewood in the final over.
Chasing 169 runs to win, Virat Kohli looked edgy initially before
putting pressure on the GT bowlers. He was given a reprieve as Rashid Khan
dropped a simple chance. Kohli looked in decent touch and kept the GT bowlers
under pressure. At the end of the first six overs, RCB made 55 for 0.
Matthew Wade kept wickets instead of Saha due to hamstring
injury. With that, the first timeout was called at 55 for 0. Kohli and du
Plessis played the spinners well keeping the scoreboard ticking making life
tough. Kohli looked at the old self-completing fifty off 33 balls making sure that
RCB are on course for a win. Du Plessis also showed intent in keeping the
scoreboard ticking. At the end of the second timeout, RCB ended at 105 for 0.
Rashid Khan provided the breakthrough for GT dismissing du
Plessis caught by Hardik Pandya. Du Plessis and Kohli added 105 runs laying a
strong foundation. Glenn Maxwell was lucky enough on the very first ball as the
ball hit the bails, but it did not dislodge.
Maxwell kept the pressure on Hardik Pandya changing the
momentum for RCB. Rashid Khan eventually got rid of Kohli with an easy stumping
by Wade. Kohli and Maxwell added 31 runs for the 2nd wicket. Maxwell
was simply sensational as he hit Ferguson to finish the match off in style.
Royal Challengers Bangalore won the match easily by 8
wickets with 8 balls to spare. With this win, RCB moved to fourth in the points
table.
RCB 170 for 2 in 18.4 overs ( Kohli 73, du Plessis 44, Khan
2/32) beat GT 168 for 5 in 20 overs ( Hardik Pandya 62*, Miller 34, Hazlewood
2/39) by 8 wickets.
For his 73 off 54 balls, Virat Kohli was named the man of
the match award.
