IPL 2022 Match 68: Ashwin’s all-round abilities take RR to second spot

 On Friday, Rajasthan Royals ended the league stage with a thrilling win over Chennai Super Kings in a low-scoring match played at Brabourne Stadium, CCI, Mumbai on Friday.

CSK captain MS Dhoni won the toss and decided to bat first. Moeen Ali started brilliantly putting pressure on the RR bowlers right from the word go. Boult produced the wicket dismissing Ruturaj Gaikwad. Devon Conway looked decent enough with his shots. Moeen attacked Boult, hitting him for 26 runs in the final over off the powerplay. At the end of the first six overs, CSK raced away to 75 for 1. During the course of innings, Moeen Ali reached fifty off 19 balls. With that, the first timeout was taken.

Ashwin struck for RR getting rid of Conway. Conway decided to review the decision for LBW, but it was retained due to the umpire's call. Conway and Moeen Ali added 83 runs for the 2nd wicket. RR bowlers made a strong comeback as McCoy dismissed Narayan Jagadeesan caught by Parag and then Chahal got the wicket of Rayudu with a lovely low catch by Paddikal at slips to leave CSK on the backfoot.

MS Dhoni took a lot of time to settle while Moeen Ali also looked out of sorts against disciplined RR bowling. At the end of the second timeout, CSK 108 for 4. Dhoni and Moeen Ali were not able to hit big shots. McCoy made life tough for Dhoni and Moeen with variations. Chahal eventually struck for RR getting the wicket of Dhoni and providing a simple catch to Parag at long-on. Dhoni and Moeen added 51 runs for the 5th wicket. McCoy then grabbed the wicket of Moeen Ali in the final over to help CSK restrict at 150 for 6.

Chasing 151 runs to win, Jaiswal looked in sensational touch putting enough pressure on CSK bowlers. Simarjeet Singh provided the breakthrough by getting rid of the dangerous Buttler caught by Moeen Ali. Jaiswal kept the momentum going for RR with lovely shots. At the end of the first six overs, RR scored 52 for 1. At the end of the first timeout, RR made 67 for 1.

Mitchell Santer took a lovely one-handed catch to dismiss Samson. Jaiswal and Samson added 51 runs for the 2nd wicket. Moeen Ali impressive performance continued disturbing the timber of Paddikal to leave RR in trouble. At the end of the second timeout, RR made 84 for 3.

Jaiswal looked in great shape reaching fifty off 39 balls and maintaining momentum for RR. Prashant Solanki got rid of Jaiswal providing a simple catch to Pathirana. Soon after, Solanki dismissed Shimron Hetymer to bring back CSK into the match. R Ashwin provided some lusty blows to keep RR on track.

Ashwin showed his class against Pathirana and made life tough for CSK. Pathirana could not defend the target as he bowled a wide delivery with 1 run to win. RR won the match by 5 wickets with 2 balls to spare.

RR 151 for 5 in 19.4 overs ( Jaiswal 59, Ashwin 40*, Prashant Solanki 2/20) beat CSK 150 for 6 in 20 overs ( Moeen Ali 93, Chahal 2/26, McCoy 2/20) by 5 wickets.

Ashwin was named the man of the match award for his unbeaten 40 off 28 balls and 1 for 28 in 4 overs. Rajasthan Royals will face Gujarat Titans in the first qualifier to be played at Eden Gardens, Kolkata on 24th May.
