IPL 2022 Match 69: MI ends Delhi Capitals journey, RCB through to playoffs
Mumbai Indians ended their 2022 campaign with an impressive win over Delhi Capitals played at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Saturday.
MI captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and decided to field
first. Prithvi Shaw made an entry into the playing XI opened the innings along
with Warner. It was an aggressive start as Shaw looked in decent touch right
from word go. Daniel Sams provided the breakthrough by getting rid of Warner with
a simple catch to Bumrah. Bumrah struck to dismiss Mitchell Marsh without
opening his account as Rohit Sharma took a good low diving catch.
Bumrah then produced a peach of a bouncer to dismiss Prithvi
Shaw leaving Delhi Capitals in big trouble. At the end of the first six overs,
Delhi Capitals made 37 for 3. Sarfraz Khan looked impressive before Mayank
Markande got rid of him providing an easy catch to Kishan leaving DC in trouble at
50 for 4. With that wicket, the first timeout was called at 50 for 4.
Rovman Powell and Rishabh Pant steadied the ship for Delhi
Capitals. Powell put enough pressure on Shokeen with big shots keeping the scoreboard
ticking making life tough. It was a good batting display by both batsmen
showing intent. At the end of the second timeout, DC made 106 for 4.
Ramandeep Singh was belted for 19 runs before dismissing
Pant. Pant and Powell added 75 runs for the 5th wicket. Jasprit
Bumrah produced a sensational yorker to dismiss Rovman Powell. Ramandeep Singh
looked impressive in the final over getting rid of Shardul Thakur while Axar
Patel provided some impetus on a tough batting wicket. Delhi Capitals made 159
for 7 in 20 overs.
Chasing 160 runs to win, Ishan Kishan showed his intent
against Anrich Nortje while MI captain Rohit Sharma struggled against Khaleel
Ahmed and other DC bowlers. Nortje struck to dismiss struggling Rohit with a simple
catch to Thakur at mid-on. At the end of the first six overs, MI made 27 for 1.
Dewald Brevis struggled initially against Kuldeep Yadav and
Axar Patel. On other hand, Kishan did not look comfortable. At the end of the first
timeout, MI scored 44 for 1.
Ishan Kishan and Brevis took the attack to Kuldeep Yadav.
Both kept the momentum going for MI with big shots. Kuldeep struck eventually
getting rid of Kishan caught by Warner at long-on. Kishan and Brevis added 51
runs for the 2nd wicket. Brevis looked in brilliant touch before
Pant dropped a sitter. Shardul Thakur provided an important breakthrough by getting
rid of Brevis taking the inside edge onto the stumps. With that wicket, the second
timeout was called at 95 for 3.
Rishabh Pant did not take a review for a catch behind to
dismiss Tim David. David then took DC bowlers to the cleaners putting enough
pressure. Tilak Verma also joined in the party keeping the scoreboard moving
ahead. Tim David showed immense hitting abilities and kept RCB's hopes alive of
reaching the playoffs.
Thakur eventually got the wicket of David taking the leading
edge to Shaw. David and Verma added 50 runs in just 21 balls. Nortje dismissed
Tilak Verma keeping Delhi Capitals interested. Ramandeep Singh showed his class by taking the game away from DC.
Khaleel Ahmed could not control his length before Ramandeep
Singh hit the boundary to help MI register a 5 wicket win.
MI 160 for 5 in 19.1 overs ( Kishan 48, Brevis 37, David 34,
Nortje 2/37, Thakur 2/32) beat DC 159 for 7 in 20 overs ( Powell 43, Pant 39,
Bumrah 3/25, Ramandeep Singh 2/29) by 5 wickets.
With this Mumbai Indians win, Royal Challengers Bangalore qualified
for the playoffs in the fourth place.
They will now play in the eliminator against Lucknow Super
Giants. For his 3 for 25 in 4 overs, Jasprit Bumrah was named man of the match
award.
