Cameron Green, Usman Khawaja, Carey knocks helps Australia end 2 in a strong position
Thanks to innovative batting Green, Usman Khawaja, and Alex Carey, Australia ended the 2nd day in a strong position against hosts Sri Lanka played at Galle International Stadium, Galle on Thursday.
The match started late due to heavy showers and wet outfield
at 1.45 PM. It was an ideal start for the hosts as Dhanajaya de Silva got rid
of Travis Head with a simple return catch. Cameron Green and Khawaja showed
intent putting pressure on the Sri Lankan spinners. Green was given not out by
the umpire as Lanka decided to review the decision as it was the umpire's call.
Khawaja looked in decent touch completing fifty off 101
balls. On other hand, Green kept the momentum going for Australia keeping the scoreboard
ticking. A superb catch by Nissanka at short leg resulted in the wicket of
Khawaja. Khawaja and Green added 57 runs for the 5th wicket. Alex
Carey looked innovative with his stroke play hitting sweeps and reverse sweeps
putting Lankan spinners under pressure. Ramesh Mendis troubled the Australian batsmen
with turn and bounce.
Carey and Green looked impressive not allowing the Lankan bowlers
to settle. Both Australian batsmen kept the scoreboard ticking helping
Australia end the extended tea session at 233 for 5.
Alex Carey eventually fell with a superb running catch by
Dinesh Chandimal. Carey and Green added 84 runs in quick time. Green looked
confident with his intent completing fifty off 80 balls. Mitchell Starc struggled
against the Lankan spinners, but Green kept the scoreboard ticking. Ramesh
Mendis got rid of Green trying to sweep. Green was given out, but the decision was
retained as out. Green and Starc added 37 runs for the 7th wicket. Vandersay
produced a superb return catch to dismiss Starc.
Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon hit some valuable runs. Cummins
looked in brilliant form taking on the Lankan spinners. Both batsmen kept the
momentum going for Australia. With the scoreboard reading 313 for 8, the
umpires called for bad light. Cummins and Lyon added so far 35 runs for the 9th
wicket.
Australia 313 for 8 in 69 overs (Green 77, Khawaja 71, Ramesh
Mendis 4/107, Vandersay 2/68) lead Sri Lanka 212 in 59 overs ( Dickwella 58,
Mathews 39, Lyon 5/90, Swepson 3/55) by 101 runs.
