England versus New Zealand 3rd Test 2nd Day: Jonny Bairstow and Jamie Overton knocks leads England fightback
It was another superb day of Test cricket as England staged a superb comeback against visiting New Zealand team played at Headingly, Leeds on Friday.
Starting on the overnight score of 225 for 5, Daryl Mitchell
and Tom Blundell continued their brilliance with positive intent keeping the scoreboard ticking. Blundell completed fifty off 111 balls. Blundell was given out
in an unfortunate manner as there was no DRS available. Blundell and Mitchell
added 120 runs for the 6th wicket. Bracewell came to the crease and
looked confident keeping the scoreboard ticking.
On other hand, Mitchell kept the momentum going for New
Zealand hitting boundaries with ease. Broad got another wicket dismissing
Bracewell caught by Crawley. Tim Southee looked in great touch right from word
go putting pressure on England bowlers while Mitchell showed his aggression and
completed his third century of this series off 213 balls with a six. Right before
the lunch break, Mitchell was caught by Stokes with a lovely catch. Mitchell
and Southee added 60 runs for the 8th wicket. New Zealand went into the lunch
break at 325 for 8.
Soon after the lunch break, Tim Southee and Neil Wagner went
in quick succession to be bowled out for 329 runs. Jack Leach picked both
wickets to pick up his 2nd five wickets haul in Test matches.
Trent Boult bowled a remarkable new-ball spell by grabbing
wickets of Lees, Ollie Pope, and Zak Crawley to leave England in trouble.
Southee produced a peach to dismiss Joe Root leaving England in big trouble at
21 for 4. Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow showed intent right from the word go
putting pressure on Kiwis bowlers. Wagner got rid of Stokes with a lovely delivery
caught by Williamson. Stokes and Bairstow added 34 runs in quick time. Wagner
then got rid of Foakes to leave England in tatters at 55 for 6.
Overton was given out by the umpire but on review, it was
overturned too not out. Wagner decided not to review the decision for LBW.
After the reprieve, Bairstow and Overton showed intent scoring runs at a quick
pace. England scored 91 for 6 at tea break.
After the tea break, Bairstow and Overton never allowed the
Kiwis bowlers to settle keeping pressure on. Bairstow completed fifty off 51
balls while Overton reached half-century off 68 balls. Bairstow and Overton
kept the pressure on Bracewell and Wagner hitting him for runs. Bairstow looked in sublime touch
completing century off 95 balls. It was a superb batting effort by Bairstow and
Overton as they ended day 2 on 264 for 6.
England 264 for 6 in 49 overs (Bairstow 130*, Overton 89*,
Boult 3/73, Wagner 2/53) trail New Zealand 329 in 117.3 overs (Mitchell 109,
Southee 33, Leach 5/100) by 65 runs.
