England versus New Zealand 3rd Test 3rd Day: England on course for a series sweep
The England Cricket Team ended the 3rd day of the 3rd Test in a strong position against visiting New Zealand side played at Headingly, Leeds on Saturday.
Starting on the overnight score of 264 for 6, it was an
aggressive start by Jonny Bairstow and Jamie Overton putting pressure on the
New Zealand bowlers. Trent Boult looked the threatening bowler and eventually got
rid of Overton 3 short of his century. Overton and Bairstow added 241 runs for
the 7th wicket. Stuart Broad came to the crease showing intent right
from the word go putting Kiwis bowlers under immense pressure with positive strokes.
On the other hand, Bairstow looked confident and completed 150
off 144 balls. Broad kept the momentum for England keeping the scoreboard
ticking making life tough for Kiwi bowlers. Tim Southee eventually got rid of
Broad with a lovely delivery. Broad and Bairstow added 55 runs for the 8th
wicket. Bracewell dismissed Bairstow trying to hit a big shot caught by Boult.
Jack Leach hit 2 important boundaries before Southee got rid of Leach. Leach
decided to review the decision, but it was retained to out. England made 360 after
being reduced to 55 for 6.
In reply, Will Young and Tom Latham showed intent right from
the word go with lovely shots. New Zealand went into lunch break at 13 for 0. Potts
got rid of Young with a good catch to Pope. Kane Williamson and Latham kept the
scoreboard ticking putting pressure on England bowlers. Latham played with
intent completing fifty off 70 balls to keep New Zealand ahead. Both Latham and
Williamson showed quality against disciplined England bowling ending the 2nd
session at 125 for 1.
Soon after the tea break, Jamie Overton got rid of Latham
with a lovely catch by wicketkeeper Bairstow who kept instead of Foakes. Latham
and Williamson added 97 runs for the 2nd wicket. With the scoreboard
reading 152 for 2, rain arrived.
England bowlers took 3 big wickets grabbing Williamson,
Devon Conway, and Henry Nicholls to leave New Zealand on the backfoot. The
inform batters Mitchell and Blundell helped New Zealand end day 3 at 168 for 5.
New Zealand 329 in 117.3 overs (Mitchell 109, Southee 33,
Leach 5/100) and 168 for 5 in 51.5 overs (Latham 76, Williamson 48, Potts 2/20)
lead England 360 in 67 overs (Bairstow 162, Overton 97, Boult 4/104, Southee
3/100) New Zealand 329 in 117.3 overs (Mitchell 109, Southee 33, Leach 5/100)
by 137 runs.
