England versus New Zealand 3rd Test 5th Day: Bairstow and Root partnership gives England series whitewash
The England juggernaut continued as they thrashed New Zealand on the 5th day of the 3rd and final Test match played at Headingly, Leeds on Monday.
Due to rain, the match started after the lunch break. It
was an ideal start for the visitors as Tim Southee produced a peach to get rid
of Pope without adding any runs. Pope and Root added 132 runs for the 3rd
wicket. Jonny Bairstow just displayed great hitting abilities right from the
word go putting New Zealand bowlers under immense pressure.
On other hand, Joe Root remained steady enough to keep the
scoreboard ticking. Bairstow kept the momentum going for England not allowing
the Kiwis bowlers to settle. It was an exceptional batting display by Bairstow
reaching fifty off 30 balls. He registered the 2nd fastest fifty by
England batsmen in Test cricket. Root and Bairstow never looked uncomfortable making at ease. Bairstow hit the winning runs with a six of Bracewell
helping the England team win the match by 7 wickets. Bairstow and Root added unbeaten
111 runs for the 4th wicket.
The England Cricket Team produced attacking cricket in the
entire 3 matches. Chasing down big targets in all three Test matches, somebody
else stood out to help the host win matches keeping the hosts on course for a
victory.
England 360 in 67 overs (Bairstow 162, Overton 97, Boult
4/104, Southee 3/100) and 296 for 3 in 54.2 overs ( Root 86*, Bairstow 71, Southee 1/68) beat
New Zealand 329 in 117.3 overs
(Mitchell 109, Southee 33, Leach 5/100) and 326 in 105.2 overs (Blundell 88*,
Latham 76, Leach 5/66, Potts 3/66) by 7 wickets.
For his 10-wicket haul in the match, Jack Leach was named the
man of the match award. England earned 12 more valuable points in the ICC Test
Championship cycle.
Joe Root was named the player of the series for his 396 runs
and 1 wicket. England team registered a dominating whitewash over ICC World
Test Championship.
