England versus NZ 3rd Test 1st Day: Engrossing contest between bat and ball
The first day of the 3rd Test match between hosts England and visitors New Zealand ended in an exciting battle played at Headingly, Leeds on Thursday.
New Zealand captain Kane Williamson won the toss and decided
to bat first. It was not an ideal start as Tom Latham was dismissed by Stuart
Broad without opening his account. Will Young and captain Kane Williamson
looked steady hitting bad deliveries away for boundaries. Jack Leach was bought
into the attack and struck immediately getting rid of Young. Young and
Williamson added 35 runs for the 2nd wicket.
Devon Conway came to the crease and looked a little steady
putting some pressure on Jack Leach. New Zealand captain Williamson showed his
class before Stuart Broad got rid of him with a lovely delivery to leave the
visitors in trouble at 62 for 3. At the end of the first session, New Zealand
reached 65 for 3.
After the lunch break, Conway made the batting look easy
before Jamie Overton got his maiden Test wicket getting rid of Conway taking
inside edge onto the stumps to leave visitors in trouble at 83 for 4. Henry
Nicholls was not able to keep the scoreboard ticking thanks to a disciplined bowling
effort by England. England captain Stokes did not take a review for LBW to
dismiss Mitchell.
Henry Nicholls and Mitchell showed lots of grit against disciplined
bowling. Nicholls was dismissed in an unfortunate manner hitting the bat of Mitchell
and straight into the hands of Lees at mid-on. Nicholls and Mitchell added 40
runs for the 5th wicket. Blundell and Mitchell rescued the New
Zealand innings keeping the momentum going on hitting boundaries with ease. The visitors
ended the 2nd session at 123 for 5.
After the tea break, Mitchell looked confident completing
fifty off 100 balls. Blundell and Mitchell kept England bowlers at bay. Blundell
was given out by the umpire but on review, it was overturned to not out as it
did not hit the edge. Mitchell and Blundell kept England bowlers away to make a
breakthrough.
