Indian women versus SL women 2nd T20I: Indian women seal the series with a comfortable win
The Indian women’s team edged past Sri Lanka in the 2nd T20I match played at Rangiri International Stadium, Dambulla on Saturday.
Sri Lankan captain Chamari Atthapatu won the toss and
decided to bat first. Lankan openers Vishmi Gunaratne and Chamari started off
cautiously before Lankan captain Chamari showed intent keeping pressure on the
Indian bowlers. At the end of the first six overs, Lankan women scored 37 for 0.
After the field restrictions, Gunaratne and Chamari continued
their aggressive approach taking singles and hitting occasional boundaries.
Pooja Vastrkar eventually got the breakthrough for the Indian team getting rid of
Lankan captain Chamari. The Lankan openers put on 87 runs laying a strong
foundation. The Indian bowlers made a strong comeback as they kept taking
wickets at regular intervals.
Apart from the Lankan openers, the Indian bowlers did not allow
the hosts to score runs quickly and took wickets in succession. From 106 for 2, the Sri Lankan women's team just posted 125 for 7 in 20 overs. Deepti Sharma was the
pick of bowlers with 2 for 34 while Renuka Singh, Radha Yadav, Pooja Vastrkar
and Kaur grabbed 1 wicket each.
Chasing a modest total of 126 runs to win, Shafali Verma and
Smriti Mandhana provided a flying start putting pressure on the Lankan bowlers.
Ranasinghe got rid of Shafali Verma caught by Dilhari. Verma and Mandhana added
30 runs in quick time. Meghana looked in decent touch right from word go
hitting 4 boundaries. Kumari got rid of Meghana stumped to leave the Indian team struggling a little bit. At the end of the first six overs, Indian women scored 52 for 2.
After the field restrictions, the Indian batters also struggled
to time the ball and keep the scoreboard ticking. Harmanpreet Kaur looked steady enough
along with Mandhana. Despite a few stutters, Kaur hit the winning runs helping the Indian team win the match by 5 wickets.
Indian women 127 for 5 in 19.1 overs (Mandhana 39, Kaur 31*,
Ranaweera 2/18) beat Sri Lankan women 125 for 7 in 20 overs (Gunaratne 45,
Atthapatu 43, Deepti Sharma 2/34) by 5 wickets.
For his unbeaten 31 off 32 balls and 1 for 12 in 4 overs, Harmanpreet
Kaur was named the player of the match award. With this win, the Indian women’s
team sealed the series with one match to go.
The third and final match of the series will be played on 27th
June 2022.
