Indian women versus Sri Lanka 1st T20I: Indian women’s team starts the tour on a winning note
The Indian women’s Cricket Team started their tour of Sri Lanka with a resounding win in the 1st T20I match played at Rangiri International Stadium, Dambulla on Thursday.
Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur won the toss and decided to
bat first. It was not an ideal start for the visitors as they lost 2 quick
wickets in succession of Smriti Mandhana and Sabbhieni Meghana. Shafali Verma put
pressure on the Lankan bowlers with positive shots while Harmanpreet Kaur
looked solid enough. At the end of the first six overs, Indian women made 32 for 2.
Kaur and Verma kept the momentum going against disciplined Sri
Lankan bowling. Harmanpreet Kaur was given a reprieve as she was dropped twice.
After an enterprising knock, Shafali Verma was caught by de Silva at long-on.
Sri Lankan captain Atthaptu were involved in all three dismissals. Verma and
Kaur added 39 runs for the 3rd wicket. Soon after, Kaur was
dismissed by Ranweera to leave the Indian team in trouble.
The Sri Lankan bowlers kept it tight not allowing the Indian
batters to score runs quickly. Ranaweera dismissed Richa Ghosh with a lovely
stumping. Pooja Vastrakar did not contribute as the Indian team struggled badly.
Jemimah Rodrigues making comeback to the Indian team kept the scoreboard
ticking and made life tough for Lankan bowlers. Deepti Sharma hit 3 successive
boundaries before Jemimah ended the innings with a six. Deepti and Rodrigues
added unbeaten 32 runs for the 7th wicket. Indian women posted a competitive
total of 138 for 6 in 20 overs.
Chasing 139 runs to win, it was not an ideal start for the
Lankan team as they lost an early wicket of Vishmi Gunarante dismissed by
Deepti Sharma. Chamari Atthapathu struggled against disciplined Indian bowling.
At the end of the first six overs, Sri Lankan women made 25 for 1.
Radha Yadav struck twice in one over to get rid of Atthapatu
and Madavi to leave Lanka in big trouble. The Sri Lankan batters never looked
to chase down this target. Apart from Dilhari’s 47, it was one-way traffic as the Indian team won the match easily. Ama Kanchana and Dilhari added 32 runs for
the 5th wicket, but it was not good enough.
Indian women 138 for 5 in 20 overs ( Jemimah Rodrigues 36*,
Shafali Verma 31, Ranaweera 3/30, Ranasinghe 2/22) beat Sri Lankan women 104
for 5 in 20 overs ( Dilhari 47*, Radha Yadav 2/22) by 34 runs.
For his unbeaten 36 off 27 balls, Jemimah Rodrigues was
named the man of the match award. Indian women’s team takes 1-0 lead in 3 match
series. The second one will be played on the same ground on 25th June.
