Ranji Trophy 2021/22 Finals Day 2: Match on even keel
It was another brilliant contest between bat and ball with some action on the 2nd day of the 2021/22 Ranji Trophy finals played at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru on Thursday.
Madhya Pradesh got off to a perfect start as Garauv Yadav struck in the first over itself dismissing Shams Mulani. After the top-quality bowling by Yadav and Anubhav Agarwal, Sarfaraz Khan showed intent against Kumar Kartikeya and completed fifty off 152 balls. Gaurav Yadav produced a peach of a delivery to get rid of Tanush Kotian. Kotian and Sarfaraz Khan added 40 runs for the 7th wicket. Madhya Pradesh pace bowlers troubled Dhawal Kulkarni getting past the outside edge.
Sarafraz Khan kept the momentum going for Mumbai putting the bad deliveries away for boundaries. Anubhav Agarwal finally got the breakthrough by dismissing Dhawal Kulkarni. Kulkarni made 1 run while Sarafarz Khan kept hitting shots. Himanshu Mantri could not grab the chance to get rid of inform Sarfaraz.
Sarfaraz Khan showed his aggression and reached his 4th century this season off 190 balls. He did not give much strike to Tushar Desphande. Mumbai ended the first session at 350 for 8.
After the lunch break, Gaurav Yadav got rid of Tushar Desphande caught by the wicketkeeper Mantri. Desphande and Sarfaraz Khan added 39 runs for the 9th wicket. Sarfaraz Khan upped the ante with aggressive strokes putting on a brilliant display of hitting. He was eventually caught by Aditya Srivastava trying to smash a big shot. It was a superb batting effort as Madhya Pradesh bowled out Mumbai for 374.
Madhya Pradesh openers Himanshu Mantri and Yash Dubey began the innings steadily against Tushar Desphande and Dhawal Kulkarni. Mantri took on Shams Mulani putting him under pressure while Dubey looked steady with his defense. Madhya Pradesh went into the tea break at 43 for 0.
Tushar Desphande produced a big wicket dismissing Mantri with lovely delivery. Mantri and Dubey added 47 runs for the opening partnership. Shubam Sharma showed intent right from word go putting Mumbai bowlers under pressure. Yash Dubey also looked solid with his defense and hit the bad deliveries away for boundaries.
Mumbai bowlers asked for a change of ball that almost did work. Shubam Sharma and Yash Dubey kept the scoreboard ticking. Madhya Pradesh ended the 2nd day at 123 for 1.
Madhya Pradesh 123 for 1 in 41 overs ( Yash Dubey 44*, Shubam Sharma 41*, Tushar Desphande 1/31) trail Mumbai 374 in 127.4 overs ( Sarfaraz Khan 134, Jaiswal 78, Gaurav Yadav 4/ 106, Anubhav Agarwal 3/81) by 251 runs.
