Commonwealth Games 2022: Indian women thrash Pakistan to stay alive in the tournament
The Indian women’s Cricket Team produced a rocking display as they registered to dominate display against arch-rivals Pakistan in a rain-curtailed match played at Edgbaston, Birmingham on Sunday.
Due to rains, the match was reduced to 18 overs a side. Pakistan captain Bismah Maroof won the toss and decided to bat first. Renuka Singh bowled a beautiful first over with a maiden over troubling Meghana Singh produced superb delivery to get rid of Iram Javed. Muneeba Ali was not able to time the ball, but Maroof looked decent keeping the scoreboard ticking. After the initial struggle, Muneeba showed intent. At the end of the first 5 overs, Pakistan women made 26 for 1.
Muneeba looked in decent touch while Maroof kept the
scoreboard ticking with singles. Sneha Rana did the damage by getting wickets of
Pakistan captain Maroof and then Muneeba Ali providing a simple return catch to
leave Pakistan in trouble. The Pakistan batters never looked comfortable as they
kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Renuka Singh grabbed the wicket of
Ayesha Naseem as Rodrigues took an excellent high catch.
A combination run out by Radha Yadav and Shafali Verma
resulted in the wicket of Omaima Sohail. A superb direct throw by Meghana Singh
made sure that Aliya Riaz fell short of the crease. Shafali Verma took a lovely
return catch to dismiss Fatima Sana. Radha Yadav bowled the last over as she took the wickets of Diana Baig and Kainat Imtiaz. Tuba Hassan was brilliantly run out
with a lovely throw by Harleen Deol and grabbed by Radha Yadav to bowl out
Pakistan for 99.
Chasing a modest total of 100 runs to win, Smriti Mandhana looked sensational, putting pressure on the Pakistani bowlers right from the word
go along with Shafali Verma. At the end of the first five overs, Indian openers raced
away to 52 for 0.
Tuba Hassan grabbed the breakthrough by dismissing Shafali
Verma with a good catch by Muneeba Ali. Verma and Mandhana added 61 runs for
the opening wicket. Sabbehini Meghana came at number 3, looked in decent touch
while Mandhana showed her class by not allowing Pakistan batters to settle.
Mandhana completed her fifty off 31 balls and helped the Indian
team on course for a win. Omamia Sohail shattered the stumps dismissing
Meghana. Mandhana and Meghana added 33 runs for the 2nd wicket.
Mandhana completed the formalities with a six to help Indian women chase down
this target with 38 balls to spare.
Indian women 102 for 2 in 11.4 overs (Smriti Mandhana 63*,
Tuba Hassan 1/18) beat Pakistan women 99 in 18 overs ( Muneeba Ali 32, Sneha
Rana 2/15, Radha Yadav 2/18) by 8 wickets.
With this win, the Indian women’s team registered their first
win of CWG 2022 and moved to the top of the points table as a result of a better net run
rate. They will now play their last league match against Barbados on 3rd
August 2022.
