India versus West Indies 1st ODI: India beat West Indies in last ball finish
The Indian bowlers held onto their nerves as they defeated a spirited West Indies side in the first One-day international match played at Port of Spain, Trinidad on Friday.
West Indies captain Nicolas Pooran won the toss and decided
to field first. Shubman Gill opened the innings along with Shikhar Dhawan
provided a flying start putting pressure on Alazzari Joseph and Jayden Seales. The
Indian openers kept the pressure going by hitting regular boundaries ending
the first 10 overs at 73 for 0.
After the field restrictions, Gill and Dhawan maintained momentum
for the visitors. Shubman Gill reached his maiden ODI fifty off 36 balls.
Nicolas Pooran produced a superb direct throw to run-out Gill. Gill and Dhawan
added 119 runs laying a strong foundation for a big total. Shreyas Iyer took
some time to settle. On the other hand, Dhawan looked in decent touch and
completed his fifty off 53 balls.
Dhawan and Shreyas Iyer kept the momentum going for Team
India taking singles and hitting boundaries. A lovely catch by Brooks at backward
point resulted in the wicket of Dhawan three short of his century. Dhawan and
Shreyas Iyer added 94 runs for the 2nd wicket.
Shreyas Iyer upped the ante taking on West Indies spinners
and completed fifty off 53 balls. A stunning one-handed catch by Nicolas Pooran
ended the innings for Shreyas Iyer. Hosein grabbed the important wicket of
Surya Kumar Yadav taking the inside edge onto the stumps to bring back West Indies
into the game. Samson and Deepak Hooda struggled against disciplined bowling by
the hosts.
As a result of the pressure, Samson was dismissed by Romario
Shephard via umpire’s call. After the struggle, Axar Patel and Deepak Hooda
smashed 20 runs off Jayden Seales to gain some momentum in death overs. Joseph got
well-set with both Indian batters shattering the stumps. Patel and Hooda added 42
runs for the 6th wicket. Shardul Thakur hit a brilliant boundary off the last ball to help Team India go past the 300 mark.
Chasing 309 runs to win, it was not an ideal start for West
Indies as inform Shai Hope was dismissed by Mohammed Siraj caught by Shardul Thakur.
Brooks and Kyle Mayers attacked the Indian bowlers. At the end of the first 10 overs,
West Indies scored 52 for 1.
Kyle Mayers and Brooks kept the momentum going against Axar
Patel. The left-handed Mayers showed his class reaching fifty off 42 balls.
Shardul Thakur grabbed the wickets of both well-set batters to bring back India
into the game. Mayers and Brooks added 117 runs for the 2nd wicket.
Brandon King joined in with Nicolas Pooran keeping the
pressure on Indian bowling. Siraj produced the magic getting the wicket of West
Indies captain Pooran providing an easy catch to Krishna. Pooran and King added 51
runs for the 4th wicket. Yuzvendra Chahal grabbed the big wicket of
Rovman Powell to put enough pressure on West Indies batting.
Brandon King looked in decent touch along with Akeal Hosein.
King completed his fifty off 60 balls and helped West Indies to chase down this
target. Chahal did the job for India getting a well-set King providing an easy catch
to Shreyas Iyer. King and Hosein added 56 runs for the 6th wicket.
Romario Shepherd provided some lusty blows to keep West
Indies on course for a famous win. Prasidh Krishna looked impressive not
allowing Hosein and Shephard to score runs easily.
Shepherd showed his hitting abilities against Prasidh
Krishna in the 49th over. Mohammed Siraj bowled lovely deliveries before
struggling for his rhythm. Shepherd took most of the strike and almost took
West Indies over the line. With 5 runs required off the final delivery, Siraj
nailed a superb yorker to give India a thrilling win. Shepherd and Hosein added
unbeaten 53 runs for the 7th wicket.
India 308 for 7 in 50 overs ( Dhawan 97, Gill 64, Motie
2/54) beat West Indies 305 for 6 in 50 overs ( Mayers 75, King 54, Thakur 2/54,
Siraj 2/57) by 3 runs.
For his 97 off 99 balls, Shikhar Dhawan was named the man of
the match award. India takes a 1-0 lead in the 3-match ODI series.
The second ODI will be played on 24th July at
Port of Spain, Trinidad. This series is not a part of the ICC ODI super League
series.
